  • Cardinals' Gordon Graceffo: Returns to Triple-A

The Cardinals optioned Graceffo to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.

As expected, Graceffo's latest stint with the Cardinals lasted just one day, as St. Louis had called him from Triple-A Memphis to serve as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Royals. He made his first MLB start in the second game of the twin bill and was the pitcher of record in the Cardinals' 8-5 loss, working 3.1 innings and striking out two batters while allowing three earned runs on four hits and no walks.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Slugs another homer

Goldschmidt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 6-4 loss to the Royals in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Goldschmidt also went 1-for-4 in the nightcap, but he struck out a total of four times across the twin bill. The first baseman is up to 13 homers this year, with four of them coming over his last 17 contests. He's at a .229/.292/.374 slash line, 36 RBI, 46 runs scored, six stolen bases and 13 doubles through 390 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Nolan Arenado: Homers in day game

Arenado went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 6-4 loss to the Royals in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Arenado opened the scoring in the matinee contest with a second-inning solo shot. The third baseman wasn't as productive in the nightcap, going 0-for-4 to keep his season-long batting average steady at .266. He's added a .697 OPS, eight homers, 38 RBI, 33 runs scored, 14 doubles and one stolen base through 363 plate appearances this season. Arenado is batting .297 (11-for-37) in July, perhaps signaling a turnaround in the second half.

  • Cardinals' Lars Nootbaar: Swats homer Wednesday

Nootbaar went 2-for-8 with a solo home run, an additional run and a double Wednesday across both games of a doubleheader against Kansas City.

Nootbaar was a quiet 0-for-4 in Game 1 but came to life with a solo homer and a double in the nightcap. These were his second and third games since the outfielder returned from a nearly six-week-long absence due to a strained oblique. Nootbar has started each of the Cardinals' three games (twice in right field and once in center) since his return, so he seems to be locked into a near-everyday spot in the team's lineup.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Collects three RBI in twin bill

Burleson went 2-for-8 with a home run, a double, two runs and three RBI over both games of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Royals.

Burleson smashed a two-run homer in Game 1 and added an RBI double in the nightcap. He's reached base via hit or walk in 10 straight contests, batting .317 (13-for-41) with three homers, 11 RBI and two thefts over that span. Burleson is in the midst of a breakthrough campaign, slashing .282/.318/.472 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 38 runs and seven steals through 322 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Gordon Graceffo: Dealt loss in first MLB start

Graceffo dropped to 0-1 in the Cardinals' 8-5 loss to the Royals in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 3.1 innings.

Graceffo tossed 4.1 frames and gave up just one run in his major-league debut June 29, but he worked in long relief in that outing. The right-hander wasn't as effective Wednesday in his first big-league start, though he yielded just one run on two hits through three innings. Kansas City notched back-to-back hits against Graceffo to begin the fourth, however, and he was pulled after a sacrifice fly yielded the Royals' second run. Another tally was charged to his ledger after his departure, and the Cardinals were never able to take the rookie off the hook for the loss. Graceffo served as the team's 27th man for the twin bill, so he'll likely be headed back to Triple-A Memphis in short order.

  • Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Take defeat in Game 1 of twin bill

Pallante (4-4) took the loss against Kansas City in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader, allowing four runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five batters over 6.1 innings.

Pallante cruised through four scoreless, one-hit frames before the Royals struck for three runs on four hits in the fifth. The right-hander was allowed to return for the sixth but was pulled after giving up a tiebreaking solo homer to Salvador Perez with one out. Pallante was consequently stuck with the loss, as St. Louis was unable to catch up. Despite the defeat, Pallante recorded his second-longest outing of the campaign while recording exactly five punchouts for his fourth straight appearance.

  • Cardinals' Gordon Graceffo: Promoted for Game 2 start

The Cardinals recalled Graceffo from Triple-A Memphis to start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Royals.

The 24-year-old will make the first start of his MLB career in Wednesday's nightcap while serving as the 27th man for the twin bill, and he should be sent back to Memphis after the contest. Graceffo has pitched to a 3.86 ERA and 71:31 K:BB over 77 innings at Triple-A this season and fared well during his MLB debut in late June, when he allowed one run across 4.1 innings of long relief versus the Reds.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: On bench for second game of day

Winn is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Royals.

After going 0-for-4 in the Cardinals' 6-4 loss in the first game of the day, Winn will get a breather for the nightcap. Brandon Crawford will fill in at shortstop in place of Winn, who had started in each of St. Louis' last 10 games.

  • Cardinals' Riley O'Brien: Set for another live session

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that O'Brien (forearm) will throw a live batting practice session at Double-A Springfield on Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

O'Brien will throw approximately 20-to-25 pitches Wednesday, and if all goes well, he could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Springfield this weekend. The 29-year-old righty has been on the injured list since late March with a right forearm strain. He's expected to fill a low-leverage role out of the St. Louis bullpen once he's activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Cardinals' Travis Honeyman: On IL at Single-A

Single-A Palm Beach placed Honeyman on the 7-day injured list July 2 with an unspecified injury.

Honeyman, a 2023 draft pick, previously spent time on the IL for the rookie-level Florida Complex League earlier this season before being cleared to make his 2024 debut in late May. The outfielder was promoted to Single-A on June 11 and slashed .321/.367/.446 in 13 games with Palm Beach before being deactivated.

  • Cardinals' Michael Siani: Sitting out Game 1 of twin bill

Siani is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Royals, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Lars Nootbaar will patrol center field in the early game. Siani will likely be back in the lineup for the second game of the doubleheader.

  • Cardinals' Gordon Graceffo: Making first MLB start Wednesday

The Cardinals are expected to recall Graceffo from Triple-A Memphis to make his first major-league start in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Royals, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Sonny Gray is on turn for St. Louis, but the club will push him back for Friday's matchup versus the Cubs. Graceffo will serve as the 27th man for the Cardinals and will be returned to Memphis after the spot start. The right-hander pitched well in long relief in his major-league debut last month, allowing one run with a 4:2 K:BB over 4.1 innings against the Reds. Graceffo holds a 2.22 ERA and 26:10 K:BB in 28.1 frames with Memphis since the beginning of June.

  • Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Royals-Cardinals postponed Tuesday

Pallante and the Cardinals won't face the Royals on Tuesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

The contest will be made up as part of a split doubleheader Wednesday. Pallante will be pushed back a day to start one of the two games of the twin bill and is no longer in line for a two-start week.
