The Clermont County Board of Health, which governs the Clermont County General Health District, was established in 1920. It was created by a state law that required every community in Ohio to be served by a public health district. After the deadly flu pandemic of 1918 that killed thousands of people across the country, health districts were set up across Ohio to protect people from disease.

Today, the Clermont County General Health District – known as Clermont County Public Health, has a five-member board. Clermont County Public Health employs approximately 50 staff members divided into five divisions and is led by the Health Commissioner.

 The Administration Division is responsible for:

• Writing grants, paying bills, creating and maintaining the budget
• Issuing birth certificates
• Communicating with the public
• Providing information technology support
• Being prepared to help the community during public health emergencies

The Environmental Health Division protects your health by:

• Inspecting restaurants to make sure the food they make is safe to eat
• Testing the water in public swimming pools
• Making sure schools and mobile home parks are safe
• Following up when an animal bites a person to make sure the animal does not have rabies

The Nursing Division protects your health by:

• Giving flu shots and other vaccines
• Keeping track of certain illnesses
• Educating people about drug prevention
• Giving nutrition and breastfeeding advice to pregnant women
• Providing healthy food, nutrition, and breastfeeding advice to pregnant women and children through the WIC program

The Plumbing Division protects your health by:

• Checking new water and sewer lines to make sure they are put in properly
• Making sure plumbers follow the rules when they replace or put in new plumbing

The Water and Waste Division protects your health by:

• Checking more than 20,000 septic systems in the county to make sure they work
• Following up on complaints about health hazards
• Testing drinking water from wells or cisterns
• Testing water at public swimming areas in local lakes and rivers
