Welcoming a new era in urban air mobility

U-ELCOME is a three-year SESAR Digital Sky Demonstrator project, whose overall aim is to support the implementation of services for the safe and secure integration of drones. With demonstrations taking place in three European countries, the project aims to support the standards harmonisation within the framework of U-space. The Demonstrator is co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility.

New Digital Sky Demonstrators to focus on automation and virtualisation
|
Three SESAR 3 JU Digital Sky Demonstrators representing a total investment of EUR 138 million will get underway in the areas of automation and virtualisation, it was announced on 23 June. The announcement is part of a larger package of transport infrastructure funding under the Connecting Europe Facility adopted by the Commission.

The SESAR 3 JU has published a second open call addressing exploratory research. With a total budget of EUR 25 million from Horizon Europe, which covers a wide range of topics aimed at generating innovative concepts, methodologies and technologies to support the delivery of a Digital European Sky.

A concept for operations for higher airspace is now available! Delivered by the SESAR 3 JU ECHO project, led by EUROCONTROL, the CONOPS defines future operational roles, responsibilities, procedures and infrastructure required to support higher airspace demand over the short, medium and long term.

Prague Airport has won this year’s SESAR JU-ACI Europe Digital Transformation Award. The airport was recognised at the annual ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards during the ACI EUROPE / World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition, which took place in Barcelona on 28 June.

An intelligent approach to addressing runway capacity

In June, the Netherland’s air navigation service provider (LVNL) successfully implemented Intelligent Approach, an arrivals spacing tool at Schiphol Airport that optimises runway capacity, while delivering better on-time performance and reducing CO2 emissions. Developed by NATS and Leidos, the solution builds on research carried out within the framework of SESAR 2020.

SESAR sustainable solutions showcased at Paris Air Show

The SESAR 3 JU showcased its research and innovation on sustainable aviation at the International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget from 19-26 June. Over the course of the week, the JU welcomed a wide range of delegations, aviation professionals and members of the public, as well as organised a dedicated session on air traffic management’s contribution to meeting Europe’s net zero ambitions.

Air-ground data exchange key to optimising runway occupancy

A SESAR Solution has been developed that makes use of aircraft data to better predict runway occupancy time. With it, airports will be able to better optimise their runway and reduce delays. The solution is being developed within the framework of SESAR 2020 project on airport airside and runway throughput (AART).
