Project of the month
U-space SEParation in Europe (USEPE)
Maintaining safe separation between aircraft is the number one function of air traffic management. With potentially large number of drones seeking access to low-level airspace, researchers in the SESAR U-space USEPE project are investigating solutions to ensure safe separation between these vehicles at all times.
Spotlight on SESAR 3 JU members
AME
Founded in 2020, the Alliance for New Mobility Europe (AME) is an alliance for all new mobility stakeholders in Europe, suppliers and users, private and public. AME unites leading companies from the various domains of new mobility (air, ground, water and upper airspace). Through the integration of this new mobility sector, AME seeks to contribute to more coherent regulation and better connected markets
Andreas Boschen begins mandate as SESAR 3 JU Executive Director
On 1 July, Andreas Boschen officially started his mandate as Executive Director of the SESAR 3 JU. Boschen’s arrival comes at a critical moment as the new partnership embarks on its ambitious research and innovation programme to make Europe’s aviation infrastructure fit for the digital age and on target to meet the sector’s net zero ambitions.
Registration is open: 1st SESAR 3 JU annual conference
Registration is open for the 1st SESAR 3 JU annual conference on 12 October. With the theme of ‘Airspace fit for the digital age’, the conference will explore how the air transport industry can get back on its feet following several years of crisis in a way that supports a sustainable and smart recovery, and strengthens the resilience of the sector.
Getting ahead of bad weather
The SESAR ISOBAR project has developed an AI-based prediction tool to help anticipate stormy weather, detect hotspots and propose optimal mitigation solutions for affected traffic. The prototype tool aims to provide better situational awareness for better decision-making.
Controllers give thumbs-up to more accurate trajectory data
Controllers participating in a recent SESAR validation campaign in Geneva have responded enthusiastically to the introduction of technology that will allow them to have a more accurate view of air traffic. Led by Skyguide and skysoft-ATM in cooperation with Airbus Defence and Space, the real-time simulations were conducted within the context of the SESAR 2020 4DSkyways project addressing trajectory-based operations (TBO).

Europe’s first-ever SORA-compliant beyond visual line of sight drone flight takes off in Belgium
At the end of June, partners in SESAR’s SAFIR-Med project got the green light from the Belgian civil aviation authority to operate a beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flight between two hospitals in Antwerp. The flight is fully compliant with EASA’s specific operations risk assessment (SORA) and unmanned aircraft system (UAS) regulations.
A summer of urban air mobility demonstrations
SESAR’s AMU-Led U-space very large-scale demonstration is planning a campaign of urban air mobility (UAM) demonstration flights in the Netherlands, Spain and the UK over the course of the summer months. The aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of efficient data exchange in real-time between drones, their remote pilots and the air traffic management system.

SESAR partners set sights on greater predictability in arrival and departure traffic
The Swedish air navigation service provider, LFV, and Thales as part of the COOPANS Alliance, have recently validated a SESAR digital solution to better synchronise arrivals and departures at busy airports. The solution is expected to improve the predictability and traffic flows, while minimising fuel burn and CO2 emissions.
SESAR Innovation Days
The SESAR Innovation Days (SIDs) 2022 will be hosted by HungaroControl in Budapest. The SIDs aims to showcase results from ATM research and explore how to advance promising concepts towards industrial research within the SESAR innovation pipeline.
The SIDs will also host the annual Young Scientist Award, recognising young scientists, who have demonstrated excellence in ATM and aviation-related research fields.
