Project of the month
Airport and Runway Throughput (AART)
A total of 32 solutions supporting more efficient, resilient, accessible, and greener airport airside operations are now ready for take-off, thanks to the work of the SESAR Airside, Airport and Runway Throughput project (AART PJ.02 Wave 2). Partners gathered on 28-29 March in Brétigny, France to showcase the work of the project and the range of solutions available to improve traffic throughput at airports.
Spotlight on SESAR 3 JU members
What is the added value of being a member of the SESAR 3 JU? Why is digitalisation critical for the future of air traffic management? Find out what members have to say in our #MeetSESAR3JUmembers series, now live on our social media channels.
Addressing the non-CO2 climate effects of aviation
The recently closed SESAR FlyATM4E project investigated how climate optimised aircraft trajectories can mitigate the impact of non-CO2 emissions based on analysis of flight data during different meteorological conditions, vertical, and horizontal flight paths.
Assuring safety in low-level airspace
Equipped with accurate flight information, the mythical Greek figure Icarus could have avoided flying too close to the sun. SESAR’s ICARUS project aimed to protect against such mishaps by ensuring manned and unmanned airspace users access the same altitude reference system.

Presenting flight labels in a new light
At any one time, air traffic controllers may have up to twenty aircraft on their screen depending on traffic conditions and the day of the week. While the number of aircraft that a controller can manage is capped to ensure safe handling of traffic, the situation remains demanding and complex. This is where the innovative SESAR solution, attention guidance, comes in.
Getting real about virtual centres
ANSPs have hosted processing infrastructure remotely for decades, supported by fully redundant networks, to add flexibility. Virtual centres go a step further by decoupling the location of controllers from air traffic service units (ATSU) to create decentralised services that no longer depend upon fixed infrastructure at local ANSP premises.

Reduced flight time and fuel burn on the cards with voice recognition tool
Pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCOs) rely on voice communications to exchange critical messages affecting flight safety, such as altitude and speed. SESAR researchers have turned to automatic speech recognition and understanding (ASRU) as a solution to potentially save flight time and fuel burn, while alleviating controller workload.
On trajectory to greater flight efficiency
Airspace management relies on modern systems on the ground and in the cockpit, yet neither currently connect with each other. In an age where data sharing is routine, two SESAR modernisation projects, ADSCENSIO and 4DSkyways, have developed ways to downlink flight information from the cockpit to air traffic control, and uplink data from the ground to the aircraft to fly more efficiently.

SESAR showcased at Fly AI Forum 2023
On 20-21 April, FLY AI partners organised a two-day conference to explore the latest developments and deployments of artificial intelligence (AI) in aviation. Hosted by FLY AI partner, EUROCONTROL, the conference included an exhibition featuring several SESAR research and innovation projects.
SESAR at EU-India Aviation Summit
On 20-21 April, the SESAR 3 JU participated in the EU-India Aviation Summit in New Delhi. The event confirmed the need to further deepen EU-India cooperation to make air travel between Europe and India more efficient, greener and safer.

REPowerEU information event
DG Research & Innovation is organising an information event in Brussels on financial and business opportunities beyond Horizon Europe, which can support the market uptake of new technologies and systems.
