For many young women entering the job market after the pandemic, full-time employment is often not available and, as a result, part-time or more flexible contract and shift work was their only option. Improved support systems better a woman’s ability to manage her family, home, and financial security. Many mature workers find the job-seeking journey very challenging. Despite possessing valuable skills, mature workers frequently feel stigma and shame linked to having lost a job – particularly among professional men. Focus group discussions revealed that loss of self-confidence frequently leads to imposter syndrome and affects energy levels, undermining their efforts to re-enter the workforce. Among those likely to change professions, over half said finding a position that fit their expertise was the main barrier, followed by given a chance (43%) and getting the required skills (33%). Our insights help identify those at high risk of being left out of the labour market, help us to better understand their challenges and needs, and point us towards viable and innovative employability solutions. When it comes to creating viable employability solutions for underserved populations, we saw that many solutions out there fail to live up to their potential because: 1.They are designed without the involvement of end-users and other critical stakeholders. 2. They focus on solving the wrong problems. At the Innovation Foundation, we set out to create a ground-up approach that would address both issues, creating an approach that is developed through a combination of research and co-creation. 21% of mature workers are open to transitioning to a new professional activity. This is highest in sectors undergoing rapid technological transformation.
