Today is International Day of the African Child, a time to raise awareness for children’s rights and welfare in Africa. Did you know 25% of the world’s children live in Africa? The lack of access to pediatric surgery and care in Africa is a profound crisis. Many children suffer from treatable conditions like congenital anomalies and injuries that go untreated due to the scarcity of specialized medical professionals and facilities. The result? High child mortality rates and chronic disabilities that impair both quality of life and future opportunities. Together with our partners, CSI works to break down barriers to care.
Ayeengida, a 15-year old CSI met in Ethiopia, was born with a severe bilateral cleft lip and had never been to school because he was too ashamed. When he woke up after surgery and saw his face in a mirror, his eyes widened and filled with tears. When asked what he wanted to do next, Ayeengida immediately said “go to school,” followed by “I want to be a doctor.” No more shame, and a life full of promise for the future.
