Nara is in Japan and used to be the capital from 710 to 784. It is well known for its historic monuments and temples as well as being a reserve for deers. This is a closeup detail of a torii, one of the entrance gates around the old city. Toriis are usually painted with bright red or orange and mean "birds perch" where in Japanese culture, birds are considered bringers of peace.

24 November 2012 - You might remember a recent post called "The Butterfly Effect" a few weeks ago. This is another of the series, but this time, a flower. I can't tell you how much time I spent waiting for the wind to die down enough so I could take this photograph. If you're wondering how I managed the black background, I took my black fleece and asked a friend to hold it behind, just far enough so that you couldn't see the fine hairs of the fleece.
