Thanks for uploading File:Phi_Kappa_Psi_Ohio_Alpha_Chapter_at_Ohio_Wesleyan_University.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Phi_Kappa_Psi_Ohio_Alpha_Chapter_at_Ohio_Wesleyan_University.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hello, NYCRuss!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

"Built in XXX..."

Hi. Are you doing the changes from "Built in New York in ..." to "Built in New York City in ..." using a bot or a semi-automated program? If so, you might want to apply it to the categories:

All the images in these categories will be buildings in Manhattan, so if they have "Built in New York" cats on them, they're good for changing to "Built in New York City" Some may not have the cat because I couldn't determine when they were built, and some may have multiple cats because they were built in stages.

The same is true of any pictures of buildings in

although there may be more non-building pictures in that category.

Just thought I'd let you know, since, all together, we're talking about approximately 1800 images which are ready for conversion, and thr thought of doing it by hand is daunting.

No bot, unfortunately. I've been doing this manually. NYCRuss 16:46, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Antwort
Yuck, I'm sorry to hear that. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:14, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Antwort
Just wanted to mention also that with new images I upload, I'm using the NYC cat, and creating it when necessary. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:22, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Antwort
Cool. If you need any help, give me a yell. NYCRuss 15:48, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

FYI

Copying-and-pasting material from the English Wikipedia to Commons is actually a violation of the license, since attribution is required. Instead, it's best to paraphrase the important information, and to keep it as minimal as possible. Beyond My Ken (talk) 08:31, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I didn't know that. I'll go back and clean up those edits as soon as I can. NYCRuss 16:12, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Antwort

What do you think of my attempt of 10 days ago to clean up my mess that I made? NYCRuss 15:46, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Novelists from NY/NYC

I notice that you've just created Category:Novelists from New York and Category:Novelists from New York City, and moved a number of individual-writer categories from Category:Novelists from the United States into the new categories. I'm afraid that this doesn't strike me as a useful measure, unless you intend to similarly create and populate categories for the other 49 states.

The new categories came to my attention when you moved Category:Willa Cather. Cather spent some time living in NYC; but she was born in Virginia, spent most of her childhood in Nebraska, and lived and wrote for some time in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, we don't yet have subcategories for those states; and a user seeking Cather material and not finding her in the "Novelists from the U.S." category might not even think to check "Novelists from NYC".

I fear that the confusion the new NY and NYC categories are likely to cause outweighs any advantage of having them. If you don't intend to create categories for VA, NE, and PA for Cather, and similar categories for other writers, I'd suggest that the moves to the NY and NYC categories be reverted and the categories deleted. If you would like to create categories for the other 49 states, feel free to do so. There is utility for what I'm doing for New York and New York City because the "People of" categories are crowded. As far as the Willa Cather category, I erred and I'll reverse that if it hasn't already been done. NYCRuss 23:21, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
