Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

THW-Fahrzeuge nach Typ kategorisieren

Moin, ich bin grad aus der de:wp hergestolpert, weil dort etliche Artikel zu den THW-Fahrzeugen kaum bebildert sind. Hier aber passende Bilder zu finden ist schwer, da die Fahrzeuge alle nur nach Führerscheinklasse einsortiert sind. Wäre es nicht sinnvoll, analgog zur Category:Fire engines of Germany by type die Fahrzeuge auch nach Fahrzeugtyp einzusortieren? Dann könnte man auch in den entsprechenden Fahrzeugartikeln auf die Bildersammlungen auf den Commons verweisen. --Felix ^Talk! 09:15, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, okay. Nur sollten dann vielleicht mal Galerien angelegt werden, ansonsten liegen die Bilder ja reichlich sinnfrei in für den Leser und Nachnutzer unverständlichen Kategorien rum und erfüllen keinen wirklichen Zweck. Mir geht es halt darum, dass interessierte Leser (oder auch Nachnutzer) die Bilder auch finden, denn sonst brauchen wir sie ja nicht. --Felix ^Talk! 13:32, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Ich stehe der Thema grundsätzlich offen gegenüber. Ich möchte jedoch darum bitten, die in der Category und nicht "bei mir" zu diskutieren. Die THW Kategorie mag zwar zu über 90% durch meine Arbeit entstanden sein, aber das Thema ist ja nicht nur für mich sondern für alle Nutzer des Bilder relevant. --Thiemo Schuff (talk) 13:55, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
