Erigeron compositus not a dupe

Hi Common Good, I noticed this dupe edit. I do not agree the two images are exactly identical or that one is a scaled down version of the other. Both images have the same resolution but quite different file sizes. One is an edit of the other, where it has been sharpened and color curve adjusted. So, one looks natural, and a little dull, and then there is the more eye-catching, bright and enhanced version. I believe both are relevant. I have taken the liberty to undo your edit. If you do not agree with my reasoning, do contact me, and lets discuss it further. Cheers, -- Slaunger 21:13, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Common Good,
Ooops, I was a little too hasty there. You were absolutely correct in adding the dupe tag. I have now "undone my undo", so the dupe tag is back. And thank you for doing these cleanup activities. It is not the most rewarding job, but I would like to say that I appreciate it. Cheers, -- Slaunger 21:46, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Understand Japanse?

Hi. I get a feeling that you may be someone who understands Japanse. If so, would you mind helping out with suggesting renames for media that only have a Japanese description on Category:Media renaming requests. The format we need is {{rename|new name.ext}}. The first 100 or so images need some native speaker assistance... Thank you. Cheers! Siebrand 20:50, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't understand Japanese. Maybe one of the Japanese admins can find a Japanese user who is willing to tag those files?

dupe

This barnstar is an exact duplicate or scaled-down version of: Image:Original Barnstar.png There should be only one copy of an image (except this one).
After getting rid of all the other dupes, you and the other helpers have been speedily awarded.

Commons is virtually duplicates free - Thanks for your efforts! Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:42, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...and you have been added as trusted user for mediamoves: Commons:MediaMoveBot/CheckPage. Would you mind adding a dot (or preferrably something more informative) to your user page - you seem sort of not-excisting when your user name gives a red link ;o) (That's a question and not a requirement, but you probably understood that). If u uploade things from the German Wikipedia to the Commons please check first if there isn't a dupe in Commons (the upload tool even helps u) Thx.--Sanandros (talk) 20:58, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Which file are you refering to? --Common Good (talk) 19:12, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please, don't delete the image Blason de la ville d'EygalièresMaussane-les-Alpilles (13).svg also if it is an exact duplicate of Blason de la ville de Maussane-les-Alpilles (13).svg. For heraldry interested users an image is never duplicate of another if the name of the owner is different. In this case deletion of image Blason de la ville d'EygalièresMaussane-les-Alpilles (13).svg could cause impossibility to find the blazon of city Eygalières (no one khows that it has the same image blazon of Maussane-les-Alpilles). Thanks Massimop (talk) 20:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In effect, in this case the image should be a wrong upload (there is another blazon of Eygalières in Blason de la ville d'Eygalières (13).svg), but the logical procedure is always correct. Bye Massimop (talk) 20:13, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So we can delete it as a dupe. But if two cities are using the same coat of arms then we could use one file and simply add a notice to this image stating: "this coat of arms was also used by ..." -- Common Good (talk) 20:25, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rename Freemantle to Fremantle in two images

Regarding Image:Melbourne in Freemantle overhead 1980.jpg and Image:Melbourne in Freemantle 1980.jpg, I notice you have tagged these to allow the images to be renamed with the correct spelling for Fremantle. Thank you for your assistance. Nick Thorne (talk) 14:10, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quite right you are. Thanks. --BrokenSphere 21:41, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please explain more fully...

You place a tag that states it should only be used for exact duplicates on an image that was not an exact duplicate.

Could you please explain this action? Geo Swan (talk) 20:20, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mmh, with a closer look at the image ... the larger image is missing a small part at the top. So indeed it is not an exact dupe. I still think the smaller could be replaced by the larger image, but however, if you would like to we can keep the samller one. -- Common Good (talk) 20:38, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate template

Hi. Please do not add the 'file:' prefix when using dupe, duplicate or badname templates. It may confuse commonsdelinker. Just the file name will do. Thanks and best wishes for 2009. Lycaon (talk) 22:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File:800px-Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg

Hi,

I am the one that imported File:800px-Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg from English Wikipedia. I was not aware at the time that it was of lower quality. It was used in one of my article in French but I have change it to "Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg". Consequently, I don't see any problem to delete File:800px-Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg. File:Rolleiflex-6008-rr-800.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

No duplication

Why did you restore this duplication template? As I have told, there is no file where you say. You should check what you are doing: perhaps you intended to notice or request something else, or you didn't write the correct name of the file you consider duplicated. But, as it is now, the only thing to do is to remove the template: under no circumstances would anyone delete a file for being a "duplicate" of a file that does not exist. Belgrano (talk) 19:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see. The problem is that you must include the "File:" prefix when linking the duplicate. Otherwise, it's not linked and appears as a red link. Belgrano (talk) 19:46, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear, that is a requirement of the Dupes tool, not of the tagging proces. TheDJ (talk) 23:24, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Be careful with low res dupes.

Just like to point you at this. A higher resolution image was accidently deleted because you tagged the "lowres". Watch out when tagging non-exact images. And in my personal opinion, when there is an exact dupe (as indicated by "The following file is a duplicate of this file" at the bottom), unless the older version has a non-descriptive name, please delete the newer upload. It preserves the contributions of original users more clearly, and it saves the CommonsDelinker bot a lot of work (work that is subject to problematic failures at times). Also note that small differences in the thumbnails are possible, even when the fullsize images are exact duplicates. The thumbnailing software has changes sometimes which can cause something like that. TheDJ (talk) 23:34, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think I have tagged the wrong file.
I tagged ([1]) the smaller image File:Atlas Agena launches GATV 11 satellite.jpg (1,169 × 1,500 pixels, file size: 2.09 MB)
It was User:Shizhao who deleted the larger File:Atlas Agena Launch - GPN-2000-001019.jpg (2,338 × 3,000 pixels, file size: 7.89 MB)
That was not my fault. Although I was the one who asked to fix it here. -- Common Good (talk) 19:01, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:JulliardSchool.JPG

Thanks for your rename at File:Bridge Cincinatti.jpg; much better than my suggestion.

Since you're on the blessed list and I'm not, can I also call your attention to File:JulliardSchool.JPG? TJRC (talk) 00:50, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of the two you suggest, I prefer File:Juilliard School - Alice Tully Hall.jpg. The institution is Juilliard, and I think it's important to have that name in there (although spelled correctly). My concern was correcting the spelling, but your inclusion of the building name is a good one. I also prefer to use lower-case file extensions, but that's just a personal preference. Thanks for uploading File:Desmo_750_1972_Paul_Smart.JPG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Better source request for File:BagleyDD386.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:BagleyDD386.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. High Contrast (talk) 20:29, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

rename needs confirmation

Hi, could you explain a bit about this change: [2]? Why does the bot require confirmation and why did you revert its change? BTW, the template "Rename media" is a redirect to simple "Rename". --Wanted (talk) 10:45, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A rename request will only be processed by the bot after it is approved by a approved user or admin. This is to prevent that a vandal can perform a rename without checking (Commons:MediaMoveBot#Conditions). I am one of the approved users. I tagged the file with {{Rename media}} to approve your rename request. -- Common Good (talk) 19:03, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

Hey man, I've seen you reverting vandalism already, and I was just wondering if you'd be interested in getting the rollback tools. It's making the vandalism fighting a lot easier, as you just need to do it with one click instead of the several with the usual undo button. I know that fighting vandalism isn't your main area here, but I'd have the trust that you don't use the tools for revert-warring. Btw, I would like to thank you for cleaning up all those Potd templates. It's great stuff that you're doing. Let me know of your decision if you'd like to have rollback rights or not. Nederland banknotes

Hello, I've receaved a message about this pictures, that they are unlegal. I would like you explain me why. They are downloaded from the European Central Bank, and in the Copyright and Disclaimer says: "When such information is distributed or reproduced, it must appear accurately and the ECB must be cited as the source". In the description of the pic, the ECB is referenced. These banknotes (the original source) come from the Nederland Bank, and in it's disclaimer says the same. And to finish, the Dutch law for issuing money says that banknotes can be reproduced if they've have the text "SPECIMEN", and the banknotes have them. So, which is the problem? I wait for your answer, have a nice day--Manu (talk) 20:54, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the reason why I filed a deletion request:

Guilders are subject to copyright 70 years after the first publication. De Nederlandsche Bank has been contacted and they state that the introduction of the Euro does not change this.

(from Commons:Currency#The_Netherlands) -- Common Good (talk) 21:02, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, you should delete also these ones, OK?, thanks for the information:
  • File:Dutch 1 gulden front.JPG (60 years)
By the way, there's a revocation about what you say (Staatscourant 1982, 161), and it was revocated on 25th August 1995, so I don't see where's the problem [3] If you delete them is according with the section 25 of Copyright Act 1912. If you demonstrate the designer doesn't allow the publication of the banknotes I'll agree with you
Thanks for the link. I updated the deletion requests accordingly. Please leave any further comments regarding this issue there . -- Common Good (talk) 21:37, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. What happens at least with the images of banknotes? Will they be deleted?. I say this for erase the "deletion quote" on the images or not. Thanks in advance, kind regards --Manu (talk) 07:32, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Deleted ("The old dutch money is still copyrighted") by User:Abigor -- Common Good (talk) 19:09, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information User:Abigor. I understand the copyright status, however, you should delete this file "File:Dutch 1 gulden front.JPG", because as in the case of my pictures, it hasn't pass 75 years since its first print. I think it's the fairest, isn't it? --Manu (talk) 20:52, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS

I have suggested to en:User:Gerd 72 that a ticket be initiated through our OTRS, to confidentially confirm his or her account that he or she worked in a job that provided opportunities to take photos of Albanian military equipment and installations. Personally, I find their account of themselves credible, and I think it is regretable that an experienced wikipedia contributor didn't suggest OTRS confirmation earlier. Renames to be done

Hi. I left a comment at Commons_talk:File_renaming#File_rename_permission you might want to read. Until non-admins can move you could make a list of ok images to move (or two: one with unused files and one with used).

Used files

Great! Just sign Commons:Administrators/Requests/Common Good and remove the <nowiki> part (the scheduled end-time) when you're ready to accept it. If you would like to make any sort of statement regarding this request, you can do so at that point. If you just want to accept, that is also fine. Patrolling edits (COM:CVU)

Hi Common Good,

In case you've missed it, since yesterday the patrolling functinality has been enabled for all edits, no longer just for page creations. This enables us to track, for example, anonymous edits on Commons. I'd like to invite you to check out the Anonymous edits list and maybe patrol part of a day. See also the updated Commons:Patrol.
If you have any questions please leave message on the CVU talkpage, my talkpage or on IRC. -- Krinkletalk 23:37, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:20, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MANGOES AND CATEGORIES

There are three files with similar file names: File:Mango 01Tent Asit fs.jpg File:Mango 02Tent Asit fs.jpg File:Mango 02Test Asit fs.jpg (Is this a typo? I might rename this file to File:Mango 03Tent Asit fs.jpg if you want so.) THE ABOVE IS A TYPO, INDEED. GOOD CATCH. PLEASE RENAME AS YOU SUGGESTED.

Impressive, all those mangoes. Good work. The article Tommy Atkins at en.wikipedia really needs an image. Don't you have an appropriate photo? Tommy Atkins mango photos removed by Rkitko

Sorry Common Good. Those photos I posted after you had requested are gone now because someone had, after 9 months, come up with a different interpretation of the word "Gallery". Not only those four images but few hundred, yes few hundred others have been removed also. There seems to be a wide latitude, if not contradictory, in the interpretation of the use of a Gallery. Now I'm scared to post any photo. And yes, I had read all about Gallery. For mangoes, for example, every variety is vastly different and therefore an image of one variety cannot represent another variety. I'll welcome and appreciate your thoughts on this suject. Category:Time XY:00 to XY:59

In my humble opinion, edits like this hardly help monoliguistic USians. For the 99% of the people who speak more languages than only US English, the description is much longer. People speaking French, Finnish or Italian even get some Babblefish thrown at them. For those who don't speak English, changing a namespace (like "Luokka"/"特別" or, OK, "Categoria"/"Kattegorie") to a word in your language (like "Category"), is vandalism, just like firebombing their city "to bring democracy". Erik Warmelink (talk) 21:22, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please, try to explain what you want in any language but English. If you can't do that without using a transliteration bot, don't try to internationalize. You were making it harder for me to understand the purpose of those categories and I had used them before. It is hard to know what meanings are common in the sociolect of USian, white, male pubescents, but one can guess, using a dictionary. Using a bot to mangle your kind of English into ruckles in other languages doesn't helps, compare fi:time and it:time to Template:Category definition: clocks and watches by time displayed. Hello, Common Good!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I would think it would make more sense to keep the older file, even if it's less popular -- secondary files are the duplicate ones that should be universally delinked and replaced with previously existing images. Just my $0.02, though, as there is no actual standard procedure on Commons for how to pick which duplicate to keep and which to delete. LobStoR (talk) 10:31, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mate, I've added a licence to the file, as you requested, however I'm a little unsure about the situation as a whole, maybe you can help. I've fully created the file myself, its not a copy as such of anything. However, I've created it to resemble the official club kit, which I found on a picture on the teams official website. Dupe handling

Hello!

I find it a bit strange how you handle with dupes here.

This example:

  • this file was uploaded by me in 2006 and had proper source, author and licence information
  • The Multichill-Bot uploaded the same file in a worse resolution more than 3 years later
  • you deleted the file uploaded by me (that was widely used through many Wikimedia-projects) with this reason "Deleted to make way for move"
  • as a consequence you moved the multichill-Bot-file to the "old"-place
  • as a consequence we had a file of lower image quality (lower resolution instead)

As a consequence I had to restore the old file back. Well, such things happen...
Dear collegue, why do you act like you act. If I handle dupes I just delete the file that is not used (or has less usage on other projects).
Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 23:50, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. Pixel size is exactly the same. I simply did not noticed the slightly larger file size. -- Common Good (talk) 19:04, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Slightly larger? The old one is around 30% larger (file size). But one question about the way you deal with dupes remain: you delete files in order to move the other ones above the old, deleted ones? Why? It is much easer to delete the file that is not used or has inferior source/author/licensing information. --High Contrast (talk) 20:41, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not always but sometimes. Possible reasons to move a file over another file are (incomplete list):
  • higher resolution
  • better description
  • uploaded by original author
  • interest to keep the old file name
  • ...

question

You deleted File:Fireboat Alki puts on a display in 1950.jpg in favor of File:Fireboat Alki puts on a display in 1950.gif with the justification that the later image was "Tremendously higher resolution."

First, the flickrreview robot uploads the highest resolution version on flickr, when it confirms the image was properly liscensed. An unknown technical problem caused a long delay in flickrreview getting around to doing its stuff, (1) uploading the highest resolution version of the image, (2) then checking it was properly liscensed. I am concerned that your deletion will impede detecting and fixing whatever technical problem was causing the delay.

Second, it is my understanding that there are a limited variety of images where a gif is superior to a jpg. It is my understanding that if this was a line drawing then the gif would be preferable. But, this isn't a line drawing, so wouldn't the highest resolution jpg be preferable?

Given these two reason do you think this deletion should be reversed?

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 00:03, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The file has been universally replaced by File:Fireboat Alki puts on a display in 1950.gif by CommonsDelinker. The replacement was issued by DieBuche with the following comment: Tremendously higher resolution.
I found the file in Category:Universally replaced by CommonsDelinker (speedy deletion) ca. 10 hours later.
I saw no reason to revert the already fullfilled replacement and DieBuche's decision.
-- Common Good (talk) 19:14, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I am going to assume that you are telling me that, you still see no reason to restore the image.
Would you be so kind as to respond to the point I tried to make about .jpg being preferable to .gif for an image like this?
I saw nothing on the note DieBuche left on the page indicating he or she was requesting deletion. Maybe that was the meaning of the note. If so it was far from clear.
I wrote to DieBuche that day, and DieBuche has yet to reply. Geo Swan (talk) 03:57, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
To make it clear: This was a normal speedy deleton for me. Not a question of JPG vs. GIF.
The original flickr file (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5281/5282945657_9e4c556cc2_o.gif) is a GIF. I do not see a reason to convert this file to JPG. If there is any good reason I will of course undelete the JPG immediately. That's fine with me. -- Common Good (talk) 19:41, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Several of my uploads have been deleted due to copyright violation. My question is: is it allowed to upload a snapshot from a movie trailer? IGG8998

Hello, Common Good

I've just noticed you deleted a file I uploaded to wikimedia. I took it from: http://la-ex.net/proyectos/oxcars-08. It was already deleted once and then restored. There is no copyright infringement whatsoever because it is a Free Culture event and they use CC licenses. I did provide the link to the license CC BY-SA 3.0. It is at the bottom of the page. What else do you need? Please restore. Regards --Pepa gotera (talk) 16:41, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the file for now. But we still need permissin for this high resolution image. -- Common Good (talk) 18:24, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Common Good. Thanx for restoring. So you still need permission from the author even if the image is CC? Regards --Pepa gotera (talk) 17:31, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The question is: Is this particular image CC? I did not find this image at la-ex.net/proyectos/oxcars-08 (the other file is much smaller).
There are three options:
  • If this image is available somewhere with a clear CC license then we do not need any further permission. Please provide a link to that page and I will approve it.
If this image is not available at la-ex.net:
  • then we need a written permission via email (See COM:OTRS).
  • or we might use la-ex.net/wp-content/img/2008/oxcars/031_oxcars.jpg without any further permission.

NATO phonetic alphabet

I had to remove the link to the sound File:NATOPhoneticAlphabet.ogg that you added to en:NATO phonetic alphabet because the original uploader Mirwin mispronounced six of the 36 words (total of 26 code words for letters and 10 numerals). He pronounced these words using the normal English pronunciation, but all agencies (FAA-NATO-ICAO-ITU-IMO etc.) agree that they have non-standard pronunciations: Oscar is pronounced OSS-CAH not Oscar; Quebec is KEH-BECK not Quebec; Victor is VIK-TAH not Victor; 3 is TREE not three; 4 is FOW-ER not four; and 5 is FIFE not five. The only non-standard pronunciation he correctly used was NIN-ER for 9. robot versus human

You deleted File:GIs at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay’s Emergency Operations Center.jpg in favor of File:US Navy 100504-A-0285B-007 Senior Chief Culinary Specialist Patrick A. Campbell, the battle watch commander for the emergency operations center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay.jpg.

I have suggested, in multiple places, that when real life human volunteers, and mindless robots, have both uploaded the same image, we should favor the images that were uploaded by real human volunteers -- like myself. Uploading images is hard work. I suggest it is bad for the project to keep the image uploaded by a robot, whose feeling can't be hurt, and not keep the image uploaded by a real human being whose feelings can be hurt.

Further, categorizing images can be hard work as well. Robot uploaded images are generally very poorly integrated into our categorization system. I suggest this is a good reason to keep the human uploaded image. I suggest that the categorization, so end-users can find the images they want, is more important than the initial upload.

I'd be very surprised if I hadn't added more useful categories to the image you deleted than have been added to the image you kept.

If two images are essentially identical, differing only in the attached descriptions, either the one with the good descriptions should be kept, or the descriptions merged.

If two images differ in having different descriptions, and one is of inferior resolution, it is relatively simple matter to upload the superior resolution to the image with the superior description.

For these reasons I request you restore this image. Geo Swan (talk) 14:31, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Isn't the current policy to not delete the description of deleted images, but to change it to redirect to the kept image? Isn't this recommended, even if there are no wikilinks or inter-wiki-links to the image, because the deletion can screw up links to the image from non-WMF sites? 2011-12-04 Mucronella bresadolae (Quél.) Corner 187670.jpg

I don't know, what I should do now. The user Sava Krstic (sava) has deleted the photo at mushroomobserver.org. If you take a look at the home of the website you could see the activity log "Image destroyed by sava: Image #187670". --Ak ccm (talk) 20:00, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe Sava Krstic deleted this image because he misidentified the species (Mucronella bresadolae). There is a very similar image showing Ramariopsis kunzei. -- Common Good (talk) 20:26, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why he deleted this image. When in doubt please delete it at Commons. --Ak ccm (talk) 20:44, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hi ty for the gloucester!

I found this photo, File:Jeune homme à la mitre van mol.jpg on here on Commons, my question is is it a copyright violation because the Place where the image is found is image on Flickr. And on the copyright license it states "All Rights Reserved" I also found the same image on the Louvre Art Gallery's website. Even though the painter that painted died in 1650. And on the painting's page on the Louvre's website it states © Musée du Louvre/A. Dequier - M. Bard Which doesn't match the name of the person who uploaded it on Flickr though the person on Flickr might have uploaded their own picture on there. But anyways the current photo on here (Commons) is licensed under GNU Free Documentation License 1.2 Version and CC-BY-SA 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, and 1.0 Generic. Which doesn't match the one on Flickr or the Art Gallery's website. So is it a possible Copyright violation? Thanks. --Clarkcj12 (talk) 22:27, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously the uploader is not the author. Using {{self|whatever}} is wrong. The painting itself is clearly {{PD-old-100}}. We can use this photograph because {{PD-Art}} applies if we remove the border. (see Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag). I have tagged the file accordingly (PD-Art + {{Non-free frame}}). -- Common Good (talk) 17:17, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Can I have some explanations for the delete of File:Garath DJ - Cospiracy (Original Mix).ogg, File:Charles Dittgen - Rainy Day.ogg, File:MenT@i - ハッピィケンキュウジョ.ogg, File:NTX 13 - Etheral Presence.ogg, File:DJ Toxik Waste - The Law Of The Underworld.ogg, File:Outsider - I Believe.ogg and File:Nybraz - Stalker.ogg? I have added a link to the pages of Jamendo that indicate that these tracks are under Creative Commons licence ([6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11] and [12]). So what is wrong? Is it because you have received complains? If this is the case, the licence of these tracks should be changed on Jamendo. ftiercel (talk) 22:03, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Those files are licensed under a license (cc-by-nc-nd) that does not permit commercial use or the creation of derivative works. Wikimedia Commons is a free media repository, which means that commercial use and the creation of derivative work must be allowed. Re-Nominate for Deletion?

Tasting_a_condom.jpg is out of scope and potentially child porn or abuse. You carry a lot of weight around here; I don't. Would you consider re-nominating that image for deletion? See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dost_test. Doug youvan (talk) 15:54, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will not nominate it. I do not think it is child porn. Feel free to nominate it yourself. "Out of scope" is not a valid reason in this case (see last DR). -- Common Good (talk) 21:09, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your advice on "out of scope". To me, this seems like a regional matter. That photo would most likely get one arrested by an attempt to print in the MidWest of the USA. On the other hand, I am a strong advocate of the First Amendment. So, I will refrain from a deletion attempt. You can mark this as resolved. I'm amazed at the amount of work you do! Thanks for uploading File:PundalikAd.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Speedy deletion of file File:Nando_Parrado_trail.png

Thank you for helping me delete the file http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Volcan-tinguiririca-2.svg. Could you please help me to delete the file http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nando_Parrado_trail.png too?

Both files were failed attempts to correct and upgrade the file File:Volcan-tinguiririca.svg. At first I did not have an SVG-editor, so I made a .png version, this file. I noticed it was faulty, and not an .svg as it should have been, so I downloaded the SVG-editor Inkscape and made a new attempt, but it was a failed attempt too. Both were unintentionally cropped. My third attempt was successful and has now replaced the faulty map which was there earlier. I have done this correction in cooperation with the original maker of the map, so there is no problem with the new map. The only problem is that I left two failed attempts behind on commons.wikimedia.org. I tried adding the template Template:Db-g6 to both of them, but it only worked on the map you just deleted. On the file http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nando_Parrado_trail.png it did not work. Can you take a look at it and see what needs to be done to delete it? The file is not used in any article, so it should be no problem to do a speedy delete. If you reply you can do it here. I keep an eye on both the file and your talk page. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Plesiosaur8.jpg.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Plesiosaur8.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Category discussion warning

Children of Cuba has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
