May 22, 1881, Hart's Location, N.H.), American watch maker, dentist, daguerreotypist, apple cultivator; son of Samuel Bemis; moved to Boston from Vermont as a youth; first apprenticed to a clock and watch maker, but then changed to dentistry, which he practiced in Boston until about 1860; moved to White Mountains, New Hampshire. Controversy exists over his date of birth, which is sometimes given as 1790 or 1793.
