English: Farid al-Atrash, or in French spelling Farid El-Atrache (1910-1974) was a Syrian-Egyptian composer, singer, virtuoso oud player, and actor. Having immigrated into Egypt in childhood, Al-Atrash embarked on a career spanning more than four decades, recording 500 songs and starring in 31 movies. Sometimes referred to as 'King of the Oud', he is one of the most important figures of 20th Century Arab music. He is also known for his collaboration with dancer Samia Gamal in several musical films.
Français : Farid El Atrache est un auteur, compositeur, interprète, virtuose de l'oud et acteur syro-égyptien, né le 19 octobre 1910 à Soueïda (Syrie) et mort le 26 décembre 1974 à Beyrouth (Liban). Avec Oum Kalthoum, Fayrouz, Mohammed Abdel Wahab et Abdel Halim Hafez, il est le plus important nom de la musique arabe du XXe siècle. Il joue dans 31 films et enregistre environ 350 chansons. Il compose aussi des chansons pour des chanteurs célèbres tels que Wadih El-Safi, Warda et Sabah. Sa voix grave et son style « triste » mèneront plusieurs chanteurs sur ses pas.
