Ruth B. Mandel: An Enduring Legacy
|
It is with profound sadness that the Center for American Women and Politics mourns the loss of Ruth B. Mandel, a founding director of the Center and an influential voice in the advancement of women's political participation.
When the Center was founded, they were told that there wasn't a subject there to study. Ruth was at the forefront of creating the subject. Because of her leadership for more than two decades, CAWP is the premier institution in the country for data and scholarship about women's engagement with the American political system, as well as a national leader in educational programs that help women and girls deepen their knowledge of and ability to participate in the politics that shapes their lives - and to do the shaping themselves.
We here at the Center owe Ruth an immense debt, as a leader, an architect of our work, a mentor, and a friend. In this newsletter, you'll see a new achievement for one of our scholars, our programs transforming to meet new challenges, CAWP's continued voice in the national discussion on women and politics, and more of our unmatched analysis. None of this would be possible without Ruth B. Mandel.
We are all enormously proud to be a small part in the deep history of the Center for American Women and Politics and, in turn, a beneficiary of and a participant in Ruth's legacy.

Virtual Campaign Training

Over the past two weeks, CAWP hosted two sessions of free webinars with Ready to Run
® regular and campaign strategy expert
Eva Pusateri. The two sessions were designed to give participants guidelines for adapting their campaigns to the COVID era, as well as encouragement to persist on their road to greater political participation. Pusateri also contributed to CAWP's blog with some of the lessons of her sessions: "While these are uncertain times for candidates, they are even more uncertain for all of us - the people you want to serve. If you always put first the people you want to serve, then, yes, it's okay to campaign." Read the full piece

Women on the Front Lines in States' Fights Against COVID-19
|
New analysis last week from CAWP Scholar Kelly Dittmar: in some of the hardest-hit states in the country, women public health officials are leading the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dittmar profiles five women health officials in Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. "Among the many individuals and groups who are contributing to the nation's fight against COVID-19, these women in public leadership roles are playing key roles on the front lines." Are you an educator? Are you a parent who is now, by unforeseen circumstance, an educator? CAWP Research Associate Claire Gothreau put together a list of activities drawn from CAWP data, historical information, and research to teach middle school, high school, and college students about women and politics. The five activity plans include: learning about women's representation in your own state and how it compares nationally; using our report,

NEW Leadership® New Jersey 2020 Cancelled
|
Rutgers University has announced there will be no on-campus courses or programs through the summer. Therefore, in order to comply with campus guidelines, as well as to ensure our staff, faculty, speakers, and students are safe, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Susan N. Wilson NEW Leadership® New Jersey summer institute. We're deeply disappointed that we won't be able to welcome a 2020 cohort and will miss the opportunity to see politics through the prism of their experiences and aspirations. We are currently exploring ways to transform program content for online formats in the coming months, so keep an eye out for those offerings.

We are thrilled to announce that CAWP Scholar Kelly Dittmar has been granted tenure by Rutgers University. Kelly's insightful analysis, prolific output, superhuman hustle, and ability to make complicated concepts easily understandable have powered CAWP to new heights. We are thoroughly unsurprised by this achievement, but nevertheless deeply proud of her in this moment, and prouder still to work alongside her every day.
