Vice President Kamala Harris: Updated Election Results from CAWP

Senator Kamala Harris has become the first woman, the first woman of color, the first Black woman, and the first South Asian woman elected to the vice presidency of the United States. "To women and girls of all walks of life, of every political persuasion, Harris's ascension to the vice presidency broadens the horizons of the possible," said CAWP Director Debbie Walsh in response to the news that the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris ticket had won the presidential election. As outcomes in this year's elections are determined, CAWP is continuously updating information, with data visualizations, on our Election 2020 Results Tracker, as well as in our full description of results, Women Candidates in the 2020 Elections, which includes additional context and notable milestones. Some updated numbers:

At least 137 women will serve in the next Congress, a new record.
At least 113 women will serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, also a new record.
At least 24 women will serve in the U.S. Senate. Incumbent Senator Kelly Loeffler of Georgia is in a runoff that will be held on January 5th.
Republicans have set a new record for the number of women in Congress, with at least 34 Republican women set to serve next year. The previous record, set in 2006, was 30.
Republican women have also broke their record for women in the House, with at least 26 women set to take office in 2021, beating the record of 25 set in 2006.
There is also a new record for non-incumbent Republican women elected to the House. Thus far, 15 non-incumbent Republican women have won House races, beating the previous record of 9.
In total, 24 non-incumbent women have won House races thus far this year.
Thus far, 48 women of color will serve in the U.S. Congress next year, which ties the record set in 2018.
At least 45 women of color have been elected to the House, which surpasses the previous record.
So far in election 2020, eight House seats have been flipped from Democratic to Republican control. Of those, seven were flipped by Republican women. In addition, a male candidate flipped another seat from Independent to Republican control.
So far in election 2020, three House seats have been flipped from Republican to Democratic control. Of those, all three were flipped by Democratic women.

On Wednesday, December 2nd at 1pm ET, CAWP will host its annual Senator Wynona Lipman Chair in Women's Political Leadership Lecture, in a virtual format, featuring this year's Chair, ABC News Correspondent Linsey Davis. Davis joined ABC News in 2007 and contributes reports to programs across the network's lineup of news shows; she has reported on major news stories spanning the globe and co-moderated one of the Democratic presidential primary debates in 2019. The Lipman Chair honors the legacy of Wynona Lipman, the first Black woman in the New Jersey State Senate, and is made possible through generous support from the New Jersey Legislature.
