Our mission is to conduct and promote environmental research in marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.

Über uns

Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre is a Cyprus-based non-profit organization established in 2009. Its purpose is to conduct and promote environmental research in marine and terrestrial ecosystems and to encourage and enhance education and ecological awareness of the general public. The members of Enalia Physis are experts in biological and environmental research and management, covering a wide range of fields such as conservation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, marine and freshwater biology, fisheries, ecology and environmental education. and the sea level rising combined with the growing importance of deep sea hydrocarbon exploration and extraction, make the eastern Mediterranean a hotspot for research. Enalia Physis and its collaborators cover a wide spectrum of environmental issues while at the same time having a high standard of expertise in all the areas it deals with. The increase of the public’s awareness as well as environmental education is a priority for the researchers at Enalia Physis. Awareness campaigns are being planned as are collaborations with other NGOs so as to increase the importance and the impact of research on the policy making process from independent researchers who do not follow agendas or governmental policies which many times limit the well intended impact of research. Enalia Physis invites members to join and help us enrich research and knowledge in the environment of the Mediterranean.

  • NEW STUDY: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of thousands of synthetic chemicals used in hundreds of types of products. “Apples, corn, kale, spinach, strawberries and wheat are frequently sprayed with PFAS-containing pesticides”. “The discovery of PFAS presence in pesticide formulations represents a new opportunity” for authorities to “improve the scientific validity of pesticide risk assessment”. • Discovering Unexpected Oxygen Sources in the Deep Sea! Researchers have discovered a fascinating phenomenon on the abyssal seafloor of the Pacific Ocean: oxygen levels increased over threefold in just two days! This surprising finding was observed during experiments conducted on the seafloor covered with polymetallic nodules. The results suggest that these nodules might play a role in “dark oxygen” production through a process known as seawater electrolysis, due to high voltage potentials (up to 0.95 V) on their surfaces. This discovery could reshape our understanding of oxygen dynamics in deep-sea environments. Dive into the full article to explore this groundbreaking research: https://lnkd.in/d5M8b63h

  • Shark Awareness Day / 14th of July Fishers play a crucial role in the conservation of sharks and rays. Often caught accidentally, these magnificent creatures face severe injury or death if not handled properly. That’s why we’ve initiated specialized training for fishers on the safe handling and release of sharks and rays found in Cyprus. Thanks to these dedicated workshops, fishers are now active contributors to the conservation of sharks and rays. Together, we’re ensuring these beautiful sharks thrive for generations to come. • Good news of the day! It is with great pleasure to inform everyone that with the support of our educational associates, the Pubic Kindergarten of Chloraka-Lempa (Saint Stephanos), in Paphos Municipality has just become a European Blue School for completing and presenting a very successful project entitled “Dealing with Marine Pollution: Causes, Effects and Prevention” for the academic year 2023/2024. This is a very important achievement as the school is now the only public school in Cyprus to ever become a member of this very important network! Congratulations to all of you! You truly deserve this certification! European Blue Schools bring the ocean into the classroom. On the journey to becoming a European Blue School, teachers and pupils will improve their understanding of the ocean and develop a sense of responsibility towards our shared planet. Creating awareness and a feeling of responsibility for our ocean, encourages students to become more active and responsible European and global citizens. More about the #NetworkofEuropeanBlueSchools, soon! Stay tuned! • Enjoy some of the magical moments that students along with their teachers experienced during the storytelling with live music show “Here Only Monachus” with storyteller Marina Katsaris and musician Giannis Koutis at the C' Public Primary School of Kaimakli in Nicosia! This show is based on the book with the same title written by Vaggelis Gettos, illustrated by Chloe Finn and published by Enalia Physis Environmental Research Center) has just been officially approved by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth of Cyprus! The show is dedicated to the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), the sole member of the genus Monachus and more specifically, to inform the viewers about all the challenges that this unique animal is currently facing. After the show, the creative duo offered a seminar to the school's teaching staff, dedicated to the importance of storytelling and drama in Education as well as the importance music and music-making when educating for the Marine Environment. This specific show as well as the teachers' seminar, form part of the project "𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙨" which consists a series of educational activities which aim towards a better understanding of the sea's and ocean's influence on us and our impact on the ocean through the Creative Arts. The proposed activities seek to actively engage young children's (from 3 to 12 years old) imagination through music, visual arts, movement, dance, drama and storytelling and to provide hands-on tools to professional educators in order for them to teach more effectively about the importance of the sea and the ocean. The aim of the project is for every human, big and small, to comprehend the importance of protecting our planet and finally, how the ocean and humans are, essentially, inextricably interconnected. Our project is funded by the Cyprus Environment Foundation via Enalia Physis Environmental Research Center and has funded both the workshop and the teachers' seminar. It is important to note that the project has received an official approval by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth of Cyprus and is also part of the EU Mission "Restore Our Ocean And Waters by 2030. Thank you all for sharing this beautiful and heart-warming experience with our team and a special 'thank you' to all the staff of the school for being such lovely hosts!
