Context: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Janus Greejatus is an adviser to the Emperor and an imperial dignitary, who is responsible to deal with daily official functions, such as serving as an ambassador. His influence reaches from internal, foreign and economic policy even to the military.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


DS Janus head.jpg Hair and Facial Appearance
  • The face gives a pale and wrinkled impression.
  • The area around the eyes is a bit darker.
  • The brows are dark grey and bushy.




DS Janus hat.png Head Covering
  • The Head Cover is made from de-saturated blue velvet (non-Panne) matching the fabric of the robe.
  • Fits snug on the head.
  • The face and the front neck is open.
  • The front bill consists of four similar parts that sit one above the other, creating small arcs with a gap.
  • There are two flaps at the sides. Theses flaps start at the height of the eyes in the front and extend upwards creating an arc, it lowers before it ends in the back.
  • The side extend downwards to the shoulders at the sides and has two extended runnersthat ends at the belly-line.
  • All visible edges of the bill and the side-flaps are piped with purple velvet.
  • The rear part of the head cover extends down to the hip-line ending in a U-shape. The runner has a piped seam near the neck that separates the lower parts from the rear part of the head cover.




DS Janus robe.png Outer Robe
  • The outer robe is made from de-saturated blue velvet matching the head cover.
  • The robe is flowing and wide.
  • The robe ends approximately 2" above the floor and leaves the footwear visible.
  • The robe is constructed to create four pleats on each shoulder in the front and back.
  • The pleats start from the shoulder-line and run downwards. Each of the pleats have the same width.
  • The pleated portion ends at the lower bicep.
  • The arm slits end hip-level.
  • The shoulders have a cap, that only leaves the collar section in the front open but continues in on line on the back. Starting underneath the collar and extends downwards to end between the second and third pleat of the robe.
    • The width of the shoulder-element becomes smaller and ends rounded. The whole part is piped with purple velvet.
  • There is a collar around the neck. The collar is opened in the front and extend backwards arching to reach the level of the jawbone at the side. The edges of this part are all piped with purple velvet.
  • There is a front opening running from the collar to the belly-line. The edges of the opening are piped with purple velvet.
  • The closure is concealed.




DS Janus innerrobe.png Inner Robe
  • The black robe or shirt is made from a medium weight natural fiber and is void of detailing.
  • The sleeves are long and end at the wrist.
    • If a full inner Robe is worn, the skirt of the inner robe ends about 2" higher over the floor than the outer robe..

  • Black gloves are made from thin fabric and is high enough to cover any skin.




DS Janus boots.png Shoes
  • Black, non-textured, leather or leather-like material.
  • Boots are free from any visible adornment, straps, buckles (etc).
  • Jodhpur/Chelsea-boots are most accurate.
