Detachment: Underworld Detachment
Context: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Ponda Baba is seen in the Cantina scene in A New Hope. He is best known for losing his arm to the lightsaber of Obi Wan Kenobi.



A and B Versions of the Ponda Baba Hands:

Please note that there are two different approvable options for this costume's hands. The "A" version are hooves as seen briefly on screen as well a production stills. The "B" version is seen on Ponda Baba's severed arm on the floor of the cantina.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

  • Made from latex or silicone and dark in color with dark plastic eyes.
  • The mask has a black beard that extends along the base of the neck up the back of the head.
  • Two large skin colored teeth are present on the front of the mask.

  • Hands are curved hooves, shaped like a scoop.

  • Werewolf type hands with 5 hairy fingers, brown or black hair and no claws.





DZ pondababa jacket.png Jacket
  • The jacket has an orange color and is made of a cotton or nylon material.
  • It is ribbed on the arms from the shoulder to the mid of the forearm.
  • It has a triangular pocket flap with a button on the left breast.
  • There is a pocket on each side.
  • The jacket has a button on the collar.
  • No zipper is present on the jacket.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The jacket collar must have a peach colored extension or pad around it.

  • The undershirt is a beige or tan color and is tucked into the trousers.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The undershirt may be a vest or bib the width of the jacket opening.

  • Belt is black and looped into trousers.
  • Buckleis square.

  • The holster brown is brown and is worn in front of the trouser belt.
  • Buckle is curved, oval in shape and a snaps to the left of the wearer.
  • The holster is attached to the brown belt.

  • Dark-Brown leather (or leather-like material) holster worn on the right hip.

  • The trousers are dark-brown in color and have a yellow stripe down both sides.
  • The stripes are sewn from the waist to the leg hems.
  • Trousers shall be tucked into the boots.

  • Boots are black calf high to knee high black leather or leather like material.
  • Boots do not have laces, straps, decorative stitching, buckles or zippers.
  • German "jack boot" style boots or low riding boots are acceptable




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.



DZ pondababa blaster.png Blaster
  • Similar to a DL-21 with a scope and without the greeblies.
  • Blaster grip is wrapped in a red spiral.

  • Similar to a SE-14R without a scope




DZ pondababa scarf.png Scarf
  • A white scarf may be worn under the jacket around the neck.
