First Order officers were military officials who held a position of rank and authority in the First Order, a military group inspired by the Galactic Empire. They wore distinctive charcoal grey uniforms.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

The Imperial Officer Corps defines additional, optional levels of costuming excellence. In the page below, requirements for Level 2 “Executor” are listed in blue. Requirements for Level 3 “Imperator” are listed in red.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


IOC Lut Jacket.jpg Tunic, First Order, Grey
  • Fabric is a medium weight, charcoal grey suiting material exactly matching the pants.
  • Tunic is fitted.
  • The closure may use hidden side (or buck) clasps, or hook and eye closures.
  • Sleeves are long, and without decoration, folded cuffs or buttons. A visible seam line separates the sleeve from the straight cuff portion, and is below the rank band.
  • First Order rank insignia are fully attached on the left arm only
  • The collar is snugly fitting, classic-style, and has a visible closure panel across the front of the neck.
    • Closure panel may attach to the side of the neck by Velcro, hook and eye, or any closure that does not interfere with the look of the collar.
  • There are princess seams on the front and back, and one vertical seam down the center of the back.
  • There are two horizontal front pockets (double welt pockets) on both sides of closure, right below the belt.
  • Tunic has two large panels on the chest, extending into the side/under-arm seam, with slimmer panels approximately half height atop it. These slim panels have two code cylinder loops each.The large panels extend across the princess seams onto the center front panel.
  • The panels are top stitched around the edges and between the code cylinder loops, with the smaller panel stitched on top of the larger.
    • Decorative stitch lines are visible in the empty space between cylinder loops and side/under-arm seam on the smaller panel.
  • The front princess seam above the code cylinder panel, from shoulder seam to panel is top stitched.

  • Worn on the left side of arm, above the wrist and below the elbow
  • Rank consists of one black band sewn down to the sleeve with Aurebesh embroidered on it. The edges utilize piping or an embroidered line on each side.
    • For Lieutenant, the Aurebesh spells “Power"
    • For Captain, The Aurebesh spells "Dillon"
  • Both piping (if used) and embroidery (Aurabesh and lines) are white.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The edges are embroidered.




IOC Lut pants.jpg Jodhpur Trousers, Grey
  • Fabric is a medium weight charcoal grey suiting material exactly matching the tunic.
  • Flared riding breeches have subtle, semi-stiff flares in the hip/thigh area, below the tunic and above the knee.
  • Pockets and waist belts are acceptable, although are not visible with the tunic on.
  • There is a fold on the legs creased from back to front, directly below the jodphur flares, tucking tightly into the boots, over the knees.




ID Hux boots.jpg Officer Boots, First Order
  • Knee-high, black, lace-less, smooth non-textured, leather or leather-like material, with moderate to high-gloss shine.
  • There are no stretch panels, buckles, snap tabs, or decoration.
  • Boot seams closely match screen-used boots.
  • Soles are flat.
  • If zippers are present, they are on the inner part of the boot shaft only.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boots have a zipper on the inner shaft.
  • Seams and design match screen-used boots.




ID Hux gloves.png Gloves, First Order
  • Gloves are constructed of a non-textured, black leather or leather-like material.
  • Gloves are have enclosed fingers, are fitted, and worn underneath the sleeves, showing no bare wrist.
  • No visible buckles, straps, or ornamentation.
  • Gloves may have three seams on the back of the hand but are not required.




ID Hux belt.png Belt, First Order
  • The belt is constructed from a black, non-textured leather or a leather-like material.
  • Approximately 2" up to 3" in width, is acceptable.
  • Belt fits snugly over the natural waist of the wearer.
  • There are no loops on the belt.
  • Sizing holes on either side of the buckle are acceptable for basic approval.
  • The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal-looking material.
  • Buckle is free of decoration, greeblies or insignia.
  • Buckle is rectangular, with sharp-angled edges, approximately 5" long & 2" high.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Belt is made of leather.
  • There are no sizing holes
  • Buckle has a slight horizontal curve.




IOC Lut Foodcap.jpg Code Cylinders
  • Four (4) code cylinders, two on each side of the tunic
  • Cylinders are smooth tubes, with a lip at the top and an indented bottom
  • There is a metal clip attached to the top, extending one third of the way down the cylinder
  • Both cylinders and clips are silver in color.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Real or high quality Replica Russian Dosimeters are used.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


IOC FO Blasters.jpg Officer's Blaster and Holster, First Order
  • Based on a replica Glock 17 repeating pistol, scratch-built with added greeblies, or a modified commercial replica is acceptable.
  • Details to be painted black and silver per reference photos.
  • Black leather or leather like holster affixed to the wearers right hip.




FOlieutenant.jpg First Order Hat, Grey
  • The hat's brim is a black leather, or leather-like material protruding from the front bottom of the dome. It is curved in shape and does not obscure the wearer's eyes.
  • The dome fits snugly on the head and cocks slightly back like a baseball cap.
  • It is fitted to the head and does not cover the ears.
  • There is a tall flap around the back half of the hat, snugly fitting around the dome.
    • This piece is not higher than the dome of the hat, and does not overly flex outward.
    • It is effectively vertical in respect to the rest of the hat, and viewed from the side, it's edges are tilted slightly back at an angle.
  • The First Order emblem is centered in the front of the hat's dome. For TFA it is black and white. For TLJ it is black and white with a red inner rim.
  • The base hat is made from the same material as the suit.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • First Order insignia is a metal pin, centered in the front of the hat's dome.
  • The dome has a subtle curved seam separating the front panel from rest of the hat, with a similar seam on the back part of the dome, with one vertical seam down the dome's back.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Hat has top stitching at the base of the dome above the brim.

  • Small hand held data pad is leather or leather like and black in color.
  • There are white designs printed on the top left cover, the design resembles a small circle with lines.
  • There is a closure on the right hand side that has white printing at the bottom and two circles on the top left. One of the circles is indented in red. The pad cover has a notch taken out of the bottom left.
