Imperial cadets were recruited by the Galactic Empire to train as Stormtroopers, Officers and other personnel in various branches of the Imperial Military.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

The Imperial Officer Corps defines additional, optional levels of costuming excellence. In the page below, requirements for Level 2 “Executor” are listed in blue. Requirements for Level 3 “Imperator” are listed in red.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


ID Cadet jacket.jpg Tunic, White
  • Fabric is a medium-weight suiting/jacket material.
  • Jacket is decorated with dark grey piping.
  • Shoulder patches are dark grey fabric and are approximately 3.5 (90 mm) in width
  • Left sleeve is decorated with an Imperial cog (Black Cog on white background) either a high-quality patch or embroidered, on the upper part of the bicep.
  • Both sleeves are decorated with dark grey piping and two dark grey sleeves pockets that are approximately 3 (75 mm) in height and width.
  • The bottom of the tunic has a dark grey edge resembling a belt, it is approximately 1.5" in tall.
  • The sleeve cuffs & tunic bottom closure can have optional elastic interfacing like a windbreaker.
  • The collar is approximately 1 1/2 in height, with two angular corners at the end that close the collar.
    • It has a similar appearance to the mandarin-style crewmen/bikerscout collar.
  • On the back of the tunic there is a center seam that runs the full length of the tunic.
  • Collar Buckle consists of a square metal plate approximately 1( 25 mm) in length and 1/2 ( 15 mm) in height.

The zipper in the jacket is concealed behind dark grey fabric aprox 1 1/4 in wide, and runs in length over the front of the entire tunic.

  • Fabric is a medium-weight suiting material without pockets.
  • Trousers are decorated with dark grey piping matching the piping of the tunic and are fitted to the costumer.

  • Worn securely affixed on the left side of the tunic over the heart.
  • Rank insignia consists of a metal bar, silver or light grey in color.
  • Each bar is 1" (25.4 mm) height and 2 1/2" (60 mm) in length.
  • Rank bar is divided by black/dark grey lines into four even tiles.

  • Black, leather or leather-like, enclosed fingered, non-textured, fitted.
  • No buckles or decorative designs.




ID Cadet boots.jpg Boots
  • Calf high black leather or leather like material.
  • Free of laces, decorative stitching, buckles on the instep or any other embellishments.
  • Boots may have a single adjustment strap at the top outside of the boot, with the buckle no wider than 1".
    • Jackboot buckles are non-shiny, they are painted dingy grey or gun-metal color.
  • Hobnails may be present on the front of the jackboots.
  • Zippers on the inside of the boot are acceptable, so long as they are concealed.
    • Zipper is covered by vinyl/ leather cover or black.
  • German "jack boot" style boots are the appropriate canon boot.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boots are made of leather.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Original German jack boots (or “Knobelbechers”) or an authentic replication thereof.
  • Boots have the top adjustment strap.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


ID Cadet helmet.jpg Helmet
  • Open faced style helmet consists of a dome and a faceplate.
  • Made of plastic, resin or fiberglass.
  • Dome and Face plate are painted white.
  • Dome Requirements are as follows:
    • Has the following options:
      • Regular Imperial Cadet without markings on the Dome.
      • Jai Kell: With blue markings and corresponding patterns.
      • Zare Leonis : With yellow markings and corresponding patterns.
      • Oleg: with green markings and corresponding patterns.
    • (2) black vent rectangles with one curved side pointing to the middle of the helmet above the eyes.
  • Face plate Requirements are as follows:
    • Face plate is white, matching the same color as the dome.
    • Eye sockets meet in the middle and use a flat dark lens.
    • Black frown runs across the front and angles upward at each side.
    • Two black vent squares are present underneath each eye.
    • There are two round "Air Filtration Nozzles", one on each side of the mouth, with (5) black vent lines. (3) spaced in the middle between them. (Two vertical and one Horizontal) (2) on top of the nozzles (one on each).





E11 Animated.jpg E-11 Blaster (animated style)
  • A simplified version of the E-11 Blaster.
  • A scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
  • Realistic versions of ANH blasters are acceptable
