⏱️Every Second Counts: How #Drones Can Triple Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates 🏥Recent findings from SWR's study on Germany's emergency response, broadcasted in ARD Tagessschau [1], reveal a sobering statistic: out of over 100,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (#OHCA) annually, less than 10% survive, making OHCA the third leading cause of death in Europe [2]. In cases of cardiac arrest, rapid response is crucial, yet responders often arrive too late, resulting in over 10,000 preventable deaths each year. 🫀A possible approach is the implementation of Community First Responders (CFRs), who, alerted via apps, provide crucial early intervention, significantly boosting survival chances by bridging the gap until emergency medical services arrive. This is especially true when defibrillators are available, as survival decreases by about 10% for every minute delay. 🚑 Our research aligns with these findings, revealing that response times in rural regions average 11 minutes 33 seconds [3] – too long for the vast majority of patients. In these cases, immediate and high-quality life-saving measures like bystander #CPR and Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) play pivotal roles [4]. In fact, survival can increase to 70% if defibrillation occurs within 3-5 minutes of a collapse [5]. ⚡Shockingly, defibrillation happens in only 1.4% of all cases, despite about 38.5% of OHCAs being shockable [4]. Furthermore, most cardiac arrests occur in private settings where Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are scarce and bystander use is low, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to ensure quicker defibrillation [7]. This situation persists despite AEDs being designed for ease of use by untrained bystanders and proven to be operable by anyone [8]. ✈️Our proposal involves deploying #eVTOL drones to rapidly deliver #AEDs to #emergency sites. In our research, we discovered that using drones could cover 85% of all OHCA cases in Bavaria, potentially tripling survival rates to over 30% by cutting response times to under 7 minutes in the majority of cases. Drones would be strategically stationed at volunteer fire departments, taking advantage of existing infrastructure and ensuring widespread coverage. Every second counts. A student initiative at the TU Munich - developing fixed wing eVTOL UAVs for real world challenges.
Info
HORYZN is a student initiative consisting of 58 Bachelor, Master and PhD students of the TU Munich. The team is conceptualizing, designing and building eVTOL (electrical Vertical Take-Off and Landing) UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for real-life use cases. 💡ABOUT HORYZN was founded in 2019. Meanwhile, the initiative has around 60 members studying at TU Munich and contributing to our different subteams: Flight Testing & Control, CAD, Integration & Design Loop, Structure and Business. The student initiative has also become part of the NEXT Prototypes e.V. HORYZN is particularly proud of the internationality of the team - 21 countries are represented. 💭MOTIVATION HORYZN mainly wants to solve real-life problems with good purpose by applying theoretical knowledge gained in university. Besides that, the initiative strives for an increased social and political acceptance of UAVs. ✅LAST ACTIVITIES In October 2020, we finished our first project: Our UAV Silencio Gamma, developed for logistical purposes, successfully took off after 11 months of testing, building, crashing and redesigning. 🛠CURRENT PROJECT Right now, the new team of HORYZN is planning to develop an eVTOL UAV for a real-life medical use case. The final goal is to obtain an operational authorization. Also, we plan to stimulate an increased exchange of like-minded institutions and people. Contact us for more details!

Last week, we hit a major milestone of our project Mission Pulse - the rollout of our autonomous, live-saving drone KOLIBRI! Over the past 2 ½ years since we introduced our first prototype, Frankenstein, we have continuously worked to improve with this second iteration, which can triple the survival chances of cardiac arrest patients in rural areas. 🚀 🩺 🎹 The event began with keynotes from Andreas Thellmann and Markus Ryll who emphasized the importance of collaboration in the field of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and highlighted our project as a prime example of meaningful autonomous drone applications. 🚑 We then unveiled KOLIBRI, the next generation of our life-saving drone efforts. Building on the successes and learnings from our previous prototype, KOLIBRI features enhanced autonomy, improved stability and cruise efficiency, and a redesign of our payload delivery mechanism, bringing us closer to demonstrating the life-saving potential of drones in time-critical emergencies. 🛫 The highlights of the event were the demo flights, showcasing KOLIBRI in flight, and our autonomous test platform, Phobos, capable of performing autonomous navigation, safe delivery of medical supplies and precision landing. ✨ Our project, Mission Pulse, brought together more than 140 students during those three years, and built a strong sustainable network between the university, students, and sponsors. HORYZN offers students not only practical insights but also opportunities to collaborate in many fields, assume leadership roles, and gain experience in team management. Mission Pulse and our drone KOLIBRI would not have been possible without our dedicated team, or our industry partners. Your support has been crucial for a project of this magnitude. We further extend our heartfelt thanks to TUM and Florian Holzapfel for their university support, and to Oberpfaffenhofen Airport for enabling us to conduct flight demonstrations at the event. We are extremely grateful for your contributions in making our mission a reality. You have truly shaped the lives of more than 140 university students.
