☀ MTU Aero Engines AG centralizes internal transportation with INFORM control system Germany's leading engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines AG has increased its internal delivery reliability from 89% to 93% by optimizing its multi-stage transport chains with intelligent software from INFORM. The company has been working with INFORM's AI-based software for many years and has been able to cope with the increasing complexity of its logistics. In addition, MTU uses a cloud-based solution for time slot management and truck delivery control. ☁ 🌥 This has reduced the average lead time from 56 to 46 minutes and significantly increased visibility into inbound traffic. ☀ It's the same story every summer: 😎 Many holidaymakers face a unique challenge: Packing efficiently to maximize both luggage space and the room for souvenirs from their destination. What most people find annoying, mathematicians see as a a fascinating mathematical problem tackled by Thomas Hales from the University of Pittsburgh and Koundinya Vajjha, CQF, PhD from Intel Corporation. They’ve recently made strides in determining which geometric shape leaves the largest gaps when packed tightly, publishing a 260-page proof on the Arxiv preprint server (https://lnkd.in/e8D7YBDD). Hales is renowned for his complex proofs. In 1997, he demonstrated that regular hexagons are the most efficient shape for covering a surface without gaps, minimizing perimeter relative to area—a principle even bees utilize in their honeycombs. However, when it comes to shapes that leave the most gaps, the challenge is more intricate. Shapes like circles and regular octagons cover significant surface area but still leave gaps. Interestingly, grinding off the octagon’s corners in a hyperbolic fashion, as discovered by German mathematician Karl Reinhardt in 1934, results in even larger gaps, covering only about 90.24% of the area. Despite Reinhardt’s plausible findings, his derivation didn’t definitively prove that this modified octagon was the worst shape for packing. In 2018, Vajjha joined Hales to further explore this problem using a method called "optimal control." Their goal was to formulate a mathematical function to generate and evaluate all possible convex, centrally symmetrical polygons. This process, however, produced infinite "pathological" solutions, requiring an additional tool to filter out these impractical results. After years of collaboration, Hales and Vajjha employed Poincaré mapping to effectively bypass these unviable solutions. Their research marks a significant step towards proving that the worst packing shape is a polygon with straight edges and hyperbolic corners, though it remains unconfirmed whether this polygon is an octagon. The two researchers, undeterred by the lengthy pursuit, remains committed to solving this complex problem, embodying the persistent spirit of mathematical inquiry. 📢 INFORM has launched its Syncrotess Optimization Plus solution at Norfolk Southern’s Austell terminal in Atlanta, Georgia.  🚂 The solution reportedly enables the terminal to have complete transparency of their stacked operations as well as optimized yard storage and crane movement operations. INFORM’s add-on AI and optimization solution takes a modular approach to adding advanced intelligence to a terminal’s existing TOS. This path allows them to isolate the terminal’s specific challenges and provide a bespoke solution for their specific operational challenges. As an add-on optimization solution, Norfolk Southern have built the required optimization on top of their existing Terminal Operating System (TOS) OPTCS 2.0. Austell is the second Norfolk Southern site running INFORM’s Syncortess Optmization Plus solution. In 2023, NS took the solution live at their Rossville terminal.
