Did you know, yesterday marked the 2024 #earthovershootday! This means, the 1st of august 2024 was the date when humanity’s demand on nature’s resources surpasses Earth’s capacity to regenerate them for the given year 😟! Obvious, that this is 𝟱 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮. To #movethedate it needs actions in five dedicated areas, Cities, Energy, Food, Population, and Planet according to Global Footprint Network. Right now, we have a global annual carbon capture capacity of more than 50 Mt CO2. Needless to say it's a big gap to 2030's #netzero goals but a strong and much needed #CCUS momentum is encouragingly growing and more and more #carboncapture projects are in the pipeline. By 2030, the annual capture capacity could amount to around 95 Mt CO2 from #hydrogen production, around 90 Mt #CO2 from #powergeneration, around 50 Mt CO2 from industrial facilities (e.g. #cement and #steel production), and around 65 Mt CO2 from #DAC plants (Source: www.iea.org). Next to growing #storage capacities (expected around 615 Mt of CO2 per year by 2023) where CO2 will be sequestered permanently, there are also growing #utilization applications of captured CO2. One main "new industry" is the production of #fuels based on carbon molecules to reduce the dependency and usage of #fossilsources. What a first day it was yesterday 🙌 It's good to see, that the "ecosystem" around #CCUS continues to develop at high speed: 🏭 Great projects like Skellefteå Kraft in Sweden, Electrochaea in Denmark or #storage improvements like #greensand by INEOS Energy (and many more) are coming to life or running already successfully. 💲 New players stepping in like ING, BNP Paribas and Arch Capital Group Ltd. helping to finance or back-up #carboncaptureandstorage projects. 🛳 Dedicated CCUS businesses are growing like Evida providing #pipeline #infrastructure for #CO2, AIMPLAS · Technological Institute of Plastics using captured CO2 for #plastic applications or interest groups like CO2 Value Europe are pushing for very much needed #EUregulations for better predictability of all involved driving CCUS progress.
