Of the combined total, 64 percent was from broilers, 27 percent from eggs, 10 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from chickens. The value of broilers produced during 2023 was $42.6 billion, down 16 percent from 2022. The total number of broilers produced in 2023 was 9.16 billion, down slightly from 2022. The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 2023 was 59.7 billion pounds, up slightly from 2022. The value of turkeys produced during 2023 was $6.57 billion, down 8 percent from the $7.12 billion the previous year. The total number of turkeys raised in 2023 was 218 million, up 4 percent from 2022. Turkey production in 2023 totaled 6.99 billion pounds, up 5 percent from the 6.67 billion pounds produced in 2022. The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 2023 was $62.0 million, down 18 percent from $75.4 million a year ago. The number of chickens sold in 2023 totaled 178 million, up 4 percent from the total sold during the previous year. Value of all egg production in 2023 was $17.9 billion, down 8 percent from $19.4 billion in 2022. Egg production totaled 110 billion eggs, down slightly from 110 billion eggs produced in 2022. Statistical Methodology Survey Procedures: These estimates were based on inventory, disposition, production, and price estimates as published in various NASS poultry and agricultural prices reports, as well as information on imports, exports, and slaughter obtained from other sources. Individual NASS Regional Field Offices (RFOs) maintain a list of all known poultry operations and use known sources to update their lists. Data are collected from broiler hatcheries which hatch over one million chicks annually and from turkey grow-out operations raising 1,000 or more turkeys annually. Also, data are collected from layer and egg contractors and independent producers who have at least 30,000 table egg layers, flocks of hatchery supply layers, or pullet only operations with at least 500 pullets. In every situation, operations are contacted as close to the reference date as possible and given adequate time to respond via mail, fax, or electronic data reporting (EDR). Those that do not respond are contacted by phone. Care is exercised to ensure that all operations of interest are accounted for in the estimates. Estimation Procedures: Sound statistical methodology is employed to derive the estimates from reported data. All data are analyzed for unusual values. Data from each operation are compared to their own past operating profile and to trends from similar operations. Data for missing operations are estimated based on similar operations or historical data. RFOs prepare these estimates by using a combination of survey indications and historic trends. Individual State estimates are reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board for reasonableness. Revision Policy: Revisions to previous estimates are made to improve estimates and are generally the result of late or corrected data. For all species, previous year estimates are subject to revision when the current year estimates are made. Five years of estimates are also reviewed after the Census of Agriculture data are available. Estimates are considered final after Census review and no revisions are made after the final estimates are published. Reliability: All estimates in this report have no sampling error since they are based on a census of all known contractors and independent producers who have at least 30,000 table egg layers, flocks of hatchery supply layers, pullet only operations with at least 500 pullets; broiler hatcheries which hatch over one million chicks annually; and turkey grow-out operations raising 1,000 or more turkeys annually. Estimates are subject to errors such as omission, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. While these errors cannot be measured directly, they are minimized through strict quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
