Inexperience leads to innovation🤔 Together with Margus Uudam we discussed: What should teens do when they finish their studies? 💡Start a startup? ➕Not knowing how it is “normally” done brings innovation ➕More energy ➕More opportunistic ❗️More likely to fail 👨💻Work in the industry first and then found a stratup? ➕Better understanding the market ➕Better perception of risks-opportunities ➕Scaling know-how ❗️ Risk of being trapped “in the box thinking” I believe that the world needs both type founders… What do you think? Communication Strategist at Bolt

Last week, I had the chance to talk a little about Bolt’s experiences operating in Africa at the African Mixer event hosted by Latitude59. Being completely honest, having made a career out of helping everyone else prepare for public speaking engagements, I was quite nervous to put the theory into practice myself. However, I had a wonderful time sharing the stage with Richard Kesküla from Planet42, and Hakeem Alavi, an IT student from Kenya. My 2 cents for anyone thinking of starting a business in Africa: 🔸 There is no golden ticket to success, or a winning business idea. It’s a hustle every day and a combination of all the decisions you make along the way. Make sure you always put your customers first and success will follow. 🔸Like there is no European culture, there is no such thing as African culture. Africa is a continent with 54 different countries and 3000 ethnic groups. Take time for thorough research and localisation to cater to the needs of people from your target region. That includes tailoring the product/service itself, as well as the marketing tactics and messaging around it to resonate with the local communities. 🔸While the franchise model has worked well for some markets at Bolt, don’t be afraid to start or expand your business with your own forces. However, you do need someone local on the ground that knows the cultural space. You can avoid a lot of mistakes, especially in marketing and PR, by trusting the locals:) 🔸It’s a continent with enormous potential and people with bright minds. Hire locally, the best talent comes from all kinds of backgrounds. Big thanks to Liisi Org, CEO of Latitude59, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, and its Ambassador at Large for Africa, Daniel Schaer, for fostering connections between Estonia and Africa.

    CEO of Latitude59

Last week we hosted our first Latitude59 African Mixer in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia and our second Summer Party! It was a great evening filled with inspiration, good vibes, and beautiful people. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us and the reason we were gathering was to talk about Africa. Latitude59 hosted its first official satellite event last year on the 6th of December in Nairobi, Kenya and we had no idea where we got ourselves into when we started planning this. But the goals were big. And oh boy we exceeded even our own expectations. It was a journey that led us to host 700+ people at the Sarit Expo Centre. We had investors, startups, a pitch competition, and amazing discussions on the stages. People asked us many times - why Kenya? Kenya has 50 million people, loads of ambition, and tech-savvy people, and with that lots of potential to become one of the fastest-growing startup countries on the global radar. Our goal was to bring the local and global community together and support that growth. And we did that. Kenya is truly a place where to start your startup journey if you want to discover the continent. The problems where you need to find the solutions are based on necessity and to create an impact. We couldn’t have done it without the support from our government and Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) and other partners. Estonia is famous for public-private partnerships and we’re a great example of that. I am humbled and honored to say that we are going back. And you are welcome to join us there too. The date is now official - it’s going to happen on the 28th of November in Nairobi again! So mark it in your calendars and come with us. Thank you Daniel Schaer for the support and a warm welcome to our guests. Thank you, Dolores Daniel, for leading this amazing project, and also for hosting the panel. And thank you panelists Marilin Kirsimäe from Bolt, Richard Kesküla from Planet42, and Hakeem Alavi, an IT student from Kenya for sharing your African experiences. We can't wait to be back in Kenya soon. See you on the 28th of November 2024 in Nairobi. Tickets and more information will follow soon! And finally, thank you team Latitude59 - I would follow you to the end of the world 💜 Photos by amazing Enriko Pedaksalu. Thanks, Uus Laine for hosting us! #NextGenerationEU 🇪🇺 #latitude59 #latitude59xkenya #kenyaedition #whatateam
