Podoloff was Jewish, his family spoke Yiddish, and he himself suggests in the article that there was no official birth certificate. Even if there was one, it would be in Russian, because in 1890 the only people reading/writing in Ukrainian were Ukrainian nationalist intellectuals. Hardly anybody, Ukrainians included, could read/write Ukrainian then. Podoloff emigrated to the US as a child and may not have even learned to speak the language. undo
