No. 222 Squadron was raised at Ambala on 15 September 1969, with [[Sukhoi Su-7]] aircraft. In July 1971, the Squadron was moved to Halwara, and was soon engaged in combat with the [[pakistani Air Force|PAF]].

In May 1975, the squadron was shifted back to Ambala, and continued to operate there until 1981, when it shifted to Hindon on 14 May 1981. In December 1985, the Tigersharks became the first Indian squadron to be equipped with the [[Mig 27|MiG 27 Bahadur]] aircraft. The then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, visited the squadron and renamed it to its current name, Tigersharks. On 19 May 1989, they were moved to Hasimara where they were active till 2011. Sqaudron was reactivated with Su-30 MKI in 2020 at Thanjavur Air force base with responsibility over IOR reigon to check PLA Navy in Indian backyard.
