Disulfiram is not an anti-craving agent, because it doesn't decrease craving for alcohol or any other drug. It prevents or deters a person from consuming alcohol, because it leads to disulfiram alcohol reaction, if alcohol is consumed along with disulfiram. Normally, alcohol is converted to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is further converted to Acetyl CoA by aldehyde dehydrogenase. Disulfiram may be useful as a deterrent drug for cocaine and other dopaminergic drugs by blocking the enzyme dopamine-β- hydroxylase. The excess dopamine results in increased anxiety, higher blood pressure, restlessness, and other unpleasant symptoms.
