The constituency was created for the [[1885 United Kingdom general election|1885 general election]], and abolished for the [[February 1974 United Kingdom general election|February 1974 general election]], when it was largely replaced by the new constituency of [[Lewisham Deptford (UK Parliament constituency)|Lewisham Deptford]].
