John comes from a musical family which includes cabaret and jazz singer [[Miklos Vig]] (uncle), saxophone and clarinet player György Vig (uncle) and jazz musician [[Tommy Vig]] (cousin). John's musical training was cut short around 1950 when the [[Hungarian_People's_Republic | Communist government of Hungary]] [[nationalized]] his father's jewellery business, the family apartment, and deported his family. John and his wife are currently avid ballroom dancers.
