Baynes was born in Boscombe Hospital, [[Bournemouth]], the daughter of [[aeronautical engineer]] [[L. E. Baynes|Leslie Baynes]], who designed what is believed to be the oldest flying [[glider (sailplane)|glider]] in the United Kingdom, and Margot (née Findlay).
