In 1932, he enlisted in the [[British Indian Army|Indian Army]] and was [[Basic training|trained]] at the [[Indian Military Academy]] in [[Dehradun]] in 1941,. gainingHe was [[Commissioned officer|commission]] in the [[British Indian Army|Indian Armycommissioned]] into the 1st Battalion of the [[16th Punjab Regiment]] (1/16th) of the [[British Indian Army|Indian Army]] in 1943.{{rp|45}}<ref name="Globe, Mahmood, 2000" /> Attached to the Punjab Regiment, he served on the training assignments to the [[Punjab Regiment (India)|Punjab Regiment]].
