The '''Cornett Archeological Site''' (44WY1) is a prehistoric and historic Native American site in [[Wythe County, Virginia]]. The site is located on a terrace above the north bank of the [[New River (Virginia)|New River]], about {{convert|0.5|mi|km}} outside [[Austinville, Virginia|Austinville]].<ref name=smithsonian>{{cite web|url=httphttps://www.silrepository.si.edu/smithsoniancontributionsbitstream/Anthropologyhandle/pdf_lo10088/1327/SCtA-0012-Lo_res.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y|title=An Archaeological Survey of Southwestern Virginia|publisher=Smithsonian Institution|accessdate=20142023-0311-2105|page=66}}</ref> It is a village site, which was occupied during the Late Woodland period, and offers evidence of significantly earlier occupation. The village had a well-defined plaza area, and may have been surrounded by a palisade.<ref name=vlr>{{cite book|editor-last=Loth|editor-first=Calder |title=The Virginia Landmarks Register|page=492|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|year=1986}}</ref> Formal excavations of the site have recovered pottery sherds, stone tools, and ceramic and metal trade items.
