The [[Eight Principles of Yong]] are said to include varieties of most strokes used in the regular script. Regular script characters with dimensions larger than {{cvt|5|cm|in|sigfig=1}} are usually classified as 'large' ({{lang-zh|c=大楷|p=dàkǎi|labels=no}}); those smaller than {{cvt|2|cm|in|sigfig=1}} are usually classified as 'small' ({{lang-zh|c=小楷|p=xiǎokǎi|labels=no}}), and those in between are 'medium' ({{lang-zh|c=中楷|p=zhōngkǎi|labels=no}}).
