The glacier is located at coordinates lat 37°45' N., long 119°16' W. Like most glaciers in the Sierras, the Maclure glacier is a small [[cirque]] glacier that is 0.5 km long and covers an area of 0.2 km<sup>2</sup>². The mean elevation of the glacier is around 3,600 m. Both the Maclure Glacier and the [[Lyell Glacier]], located nearby on [[Mount Lyell (California)|Mount Lyell]], have [[Retreat of glaciers since 1850|retreated since]] their first discovery. Despite the retreat, the two glaciers are the largest glaciers remaining in Yosemite National Park.
