Ambassador Li was otherwise known to be an unyielding patriot and fierce fighting cock. He has more than once shocked foreign reporters with his unambiguous and non-negotiating stance when defending the human rights conditions and territorial integrity of his country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruhnama (talk • contribs) 04:09, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Even more astonishingly, The Elders has welcomed Li Zhaoxing, the former Foreign Minister of communist China, as one of its "wise" men. Zhaoxing was the foreign representative for a country that is known for extensive human rights abuses, including a coercive one-child policy that has resulted in forced abortion and forced sterilizations. In one question and answer session at the Institute for Corean-American Studies, Inc. in 2000, Zhaoxing responded to questions about the one-child policy by stating that it is an admirable policy worthy of emulation elsewhere.

"Generally speaking," said Zhaoxing about the one-child policy, "this policy reflects the interests of the nation and people support it. And we really don't know why some politicians in this country (America) don't. I believe if they go to China and see for themselves, they would have a different idea."

Mary Robinson and Global Elders
Mary Robinson has been on the radio promoting here role in the so-called 'Global Elders' www.theelders.org. Roisin Ingle, in her usual insightful manner, stubbornly refused to ask Mrs Robinson about whether or not she is comfortable with the presence of Mr Li Zhaoxing as an elder.

Mr Li, communist China's former Foreign Minister, famously said about the Tiananmen Square massacre:
Quote:
what happened that long ago was entirely and still is China's internal matters, and probably decisions made by the government in 1989 has proved to be the right option. Without what government had done, China wouldn't be able to enjoy the stability and the economic prosperity as it is enjoying today.

So, is it right that Mary Robinson, a self-appointed champion of human rights, sits on a committee with a communist who minimises the tragedy that saw at least 3,000 students murdered?

Particularly when one considers that what'll be going on behind these closed doors will be a lot of impromptu napping with half-clutched cups of exceptionally milky tea dribbling into so many prosthetically reinforced laps. But let Li Zhaoxing recite just one more Shakespearean sonnet to another slack-jawed, watery-eyed retiree of the same gender and I think you'll find that the laughter will give way to epidemics of despair and a sky-rocketing suicide rate amongst the 70 pluses.

At some point since their foundation, Li Zhaoxing has departed from the group, although the reason for that departure could not be ascertained at the time of writing.

In her automated group dynamics report astrological researcher Bernadette Brady had this to say about Cancerian 'tribal elders' groups:

"This group wants to nurture, look after, foster, and care for the community that they govern. They are prepared to take action to make this happen, and their prime motivation is to ensure the emotional well-being and satisfaction of their people. In this way, they can be a very effective Tribal Elder Group, as they can stabilise a community, allowing it to consolidate resources and, if needs be, improve its emotional security. This Tribal Elder Group tend to see the whole community as a large family."

The Achilles heel of having Cancer as the dominant Zodiac Sign is a sensitivity to being unwelcomed and rejected, and an over-emotional response to those outside the group.

"The shadow side of this sign emphases is that the Tribal Elder Group will feel unloved or disrespected if at any stage their community does not want or appreciate their efforts or their decisions. Different members of the group can then feel quite hurt and will try to emotionally manipulate others in order to maintain their power or position. If you are a member of this Tribal Elder Group, then encourage activities which result in the making of supportive decisions that help members of the community. But also help the group recognise that there will be times when not all members of the community necessarily agree with them and, if it is a democratic relationship and they want their community to grow, rather than to splinter, it is important that they accept this criticism in good faith."

A further potential problem not mentioned by Bernadette Brady is that of becoming an impenetrable clique. The Sign of Cancer is known for its closed doors to those it considers outsiders, especially those who are 'different' and whose 'faces don't fit'. The original internal culture of the group can assume disproportionate importance, feeling threatened by outside invasion and anything new.

Li Zhaoxing has delivered some 300 speeches on crucial issues concerning Iraq, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda, Cyprus, and Central Asia, as well as on arms control, climate change and human rights.

He’s a good talker, then. But what did he say? What was he, or rather his bosses in Beijing, for and against? Raise your hand if you feel that China has, on balance, played a constructive role in the deliberations at the UN.

Annan was a disaster at the UN. Carter could be fighting it out with Lyndon Johnson as the worst American President of the last century. Nelson Mandela is anti-American and I suspect borderline senile as well. Li Zhaoxing is a former Chinese government official and who wants a flack for a despotic communist government giving advice about anything? Then there's Desmond Tutu, who was last seen speaking up for Tookie Williams, a man who founded the Crips and then made some children's books to trick dumb liberals like Tutu into trying to save him from the death penalty.

Muhammad Yunus spoke of how being on the same
platform as Mr Mandela was “the proudest day of my
life”, while Li Zhaoxing demonstrated a surprisingly
poetic sensibility by turning to Mr Mandela and
reciting the first verse of Shakespeare’s 18th sonnet:
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day...”
