Arun Gawli is a don from Mumbai, India. In 2004, heHe was elected as a MLA from the Mumbai Chinchpoklil Constituency as an Akhil Bharatiya Sena candidate during the 2004 elections for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly . He is believed to have risen into prominence because of his "native roots" as a localite, while most other dons had come from other places and were muslims, unlike gawli a hindu (his wife happens to be a muslim). Gawli was at one point actively supported by Bal Thackeray, but his links to Thackeray and Shiv Sena were later broken. In the murky world of Bombay Underworld he was more involved with extortions and was believed to have been supported by some powerful bureaucrats and politicians, after the vacuum created by Dawood Ibrahim runing off from Bombay after the terrorist bombing carried out by him. He was slowly losing his relevance, and stepped into mainstream politics and further burnt his bridges with his mentors.
