He studied chemistry at the [[University of Kansas]] (B.S., 1975), [[Ph.D.]] 1980, [[Harvard University]], under Professor [[E. J. Corey]]. Following graduate school, he joined the faculty at the [[University of Kansas]] where he became assistant/associate professor of medicinal chemistry (1979–1985).
