In retirement Donaldson lived in [[Pulborough]], [[West Sussex]], where his interests included gardening, current affairs, drama, walking, swimming and patronage of the White Horse (Pulborough) and Rising Sun ([[Nutbourne, Horsham|Nutbourne]]) pubs.
