Ȥ (minuscule: ȥ, Unicode codepoints U+0224 and U+0225, respectively), a Latin letter Z with a hook, is used[citation needed] in modern transcriptions of Old and Middle High German to a represent a coronal fricative, which in the original texts was written with Z. As Z was also used to represent a voiceless alveolar affricate, a hook was added to distinguish the two sounds. The exact phonetic nature of this sound is uncertain. It developed out of Proto-Germanic *z, and later was pronounced identically to /s/.
