Robert J. McCann (born 15 March 1958) is an Irish-American entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the Co-Chairman of NewEdge Capital Group and the Managing Partner and Majority Owner of Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina.[2][3]

McCann is best known for serving as Vice Chairman and President of Global Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch and as Chairman of UBS Group AG wealth management. He is an active philanthropist in the fields of education, military family support, and Irish-American culture.[4][5]

Career

Merrill Lynch

McCann's career at Merrill Lynch began in 1982 as an equity trader.[6] During his tenure, he held several executive leadership positions. He was the Head of the Global Equity Trading & Markets Division, where he was responsible for the trading, risk management, and distribution of Merrill's global equity products.[7][8] McCann was the Vice-Chairman of the firm's Wealth Management Group (including Global Private Client and Merrill Lynch Investment Management),[9] the Head of Global Securities Research and Economics, the Chief Operating Officer of Global Markets and Investment Banking, and the Head of Global Institutional Sales.[10]

McCann took a brief break from Merrill Lynch in 2003 and worked for AXA Financial as the Vice-Chairman of distribution and marketing. He returned to Merrill in July 2003.[11]

UBS Group Americas

McCann joined the Swiss bank UBS AG in October of 2009.[12][13] He served as president of UBS Wealth Management Americas and on the UBS Group Executive Board. He is widely credited with turning around UBS's wealth management business in the United States and making it a critical part of the firm's global strategy.[14] Under McCann's leadership, Wealth Management Americas launched Revitalizing America, an initiative created in response to investors' concerns about America's long-term economic prospects.[15]

The initiative featured a series of client engagements and programs hosted by UBS to discuss non-partisan ways to revitalize the U.S. economy and improve competitiveness. The program included an event in San Francisco in 2013 featuring a conversation with former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.[16]

The Clinton Foundation and UBS Wealth Management Americas formed the CEO-UBS Small Business Advisory Program, a philanthropic partnership aimed at boosting business and job growth by bolstering the knowledge and skills of small business owners in underserved communities. The Foundation's Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative (CEO) and UBS Wealth Management Americas in 2011 concluded the six-month pilot mentorship program in the New York City metropolitan area, where small business owners received guidance from a UBS financial advisor, along with access to Wealth Management Americas clients who are experienced business leaders.[17] In 2012, the program was rolled out across firms in Chicago and Los Angeles.[18]

McCann was named Chairman of UBS Americas in 2016. In that role he worked with the firm’s largest and most strategic clients. In addition, he worked closely with UBS’s Public Policy Office to improve UBS’s competitive positioning and public reputation through engagement with members of Congress.[19]

On August 13, 2020 McCann announced his departure from UBS.[20]

Forest Creek Golf Club

McCann is currently the Managing Partner and Majority Owner of Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina.[2][3] Forest Creek is a 1,285-acre property with two Tom Fazio-designed courses. Forest Creek is one of only two residential golf courses in the nation to feature two "Top 100" golf courses, as ranked by Golf Week.[21]

Boards and organizations

McCann has worked with various securities associations and exchanges. He is a former governor of FINRA[22] and board member of the Securities Industry Association.[23]

Philanthropy

Irish Arts Center

McCann serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Irish Arts Center. He has supported the construction and program planning for the New York City-based performance center.[24][25]

Dixon Center Services

Dixon Center enables existing veteran-support programs to strengthen their positive impact in the community. In January 2022, McCann was announced as a member of the Dixon Center Command Council.[26]

No Greater Sacrifice

McCann is an Executive Patron and member of the Presidents Circle of No Greater Sacrifice, an organization that funds the education of children of military personnel who have been wounded or killed in the line of duty.[27]

Sandhills Community College

McCann serves on the Board of Directors of the Sandhills Community College Foundation in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Sandhills Community College Foundation is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to promote the Sandhills Community College mission in the community.[28]

Bethany College

McCann is the founder of the Learning Center at Bethany College, his alma mater. The mission of the Center is to enhance the learning skills of all students, transform the college experience of students with learning challenges and support the heightened performance of faculty and staff.[29] McCann also established the Student Investment Fund, which enables Bethany students to serve as investment professionals in managing and investing endowment funds.[30] In 2015, McCann and his wife Cindy donated a challenge gift in order to fund technology upgrades, personnel, and modern processes.[31] After serving as a Trustee of Bethany College for many years, McCann was named Trustee Emeritus in 2019.
