help

am looiking for a famous couple.the couple marriedd and didnt live together.when they did the guy had grown big toe nails and beards.the clues i have is that its found under wikipedia and its a very famous couple back in the days.

The man sounds like Howard Hughes. Our article says he was married three times, the second and third wives were both actresses - Terry Moore and Jean Peters, so it could be either of those. --Richardrj talk email 08:03, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Game identification

Sorry to pollute the RD with such a frivolous question, but this has been nagging at me for a while now - I'm trying to remember the name of a PC game I played years ago. It was a sort of role-playing game, in which you were a freelance "worker", and you travelled between a load of underwater cities/empires in your submarine, and they gave you missions/tasks. As you did missions for one city, the other ones liked you less, since there was a bit of rivalry between them. It was sort of a sci-fi/fantasy setting. Anyone have any idea what it was called? Thanks, Icthyos 12:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Except for the underwater part, it sounds a lot like Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters. One of the races (the Slylandro) lives on a gas giant planet, which looks similar to being underwater. Travisl 15:37, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort

Shaq and his free throws

How can a professional (and star-considered) NBA player have such an abysmal percentage of free throws? I'm pretty sure I would do better than his 50% and I have never played even amateur basketball, just tried some extremely rare games. --Taraborn 19:02, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

He's not the only one. Wilt Chamberlain was worse (51.1% vs 53.1%) and Bill Russell was not much better (56.1%). Clarityfiend 20:11, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort
To answer your question. Because he's not very good at throwing? 213.48.15.234 08:22, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
One explanation is that, like so many things in sports, shooting free throws is a skill, and requires practice to master. Given a limited number of hours in which to practice a variety of skills, many players - particularly "big men" - seem to opt not to master free throws. Carom 12:24, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Some other things to consider (which may or may not support my contention above): O'Neal is 8th all time in points per game (25.9), tied 2nd all time in field goal percentage (58.0%), 12th all time in total points (25,454) 13th all time in blocks per game (2.48) and 21st all time in rebounds per game (11.6). I think it might be reasonable to suggest that the time spent mastering these other aspects of the game left him little opportunity to also master the art of free throws. Carom 18:34, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
The distance of a free-throw is what, 15 feet from the basket? That's quite far to me. I think it's definitely a skill that isn't as easy to master as you say (though perhaps you are naturally good at it). Much like penalties in football (soccer) perhaps it isn't the 'technique' that is the only issue, but that pressure plays a major role too? I suspect Shaq out plays good free-throwers in other areas of his game, so it's a case of one's strength is another's weakness. ny156uk 17:01, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I highly doubt that it is because he just didn't practice free throws enough. Even early in his career it was a common tactic to send him to the free throw line instead of letting him take a shot, so he would know how important it is. He's even worked with free throw specialist coaches to improve that part of his game but it doesn't appear to have helped much. Maybe he's too strong and it messes him up. I can't think of any great rebounders that were also good ft shooters. Recury 18:54, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, some rebounders were at least average free throw shooters - take a look at the top rebounders listed here. Of the top ten all-time rebounders, Bob Pettit, Jerry Lucas, Dave Cowens, Elgin Baylor and George Mikan all shot better than 70% from the line (and all except Petit shot 78% or better). And to be fair, O'Neal hasn't always been truly abysmal - he shot over 60% in three seasons, including 65% in 2001-2002. Carom 19:20, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bassoon Part in 'Carmina Burana'- Carl Orff

I have recently been asked to play the bassoon part to Carmina Burana in an orchestra. It is one of those 'come along and sing' days, and they need volunteers to fill seats in the orchestra, i am about grade 6 on the bassoon, i am slightly apprehensive about the whole thing, could someone tell me about the part, is it particularly hard? It will be sent to me sooner the time, but i would like to know beforehand about it, thanks in advance, RobertsZ 20:06, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am not certain if the Entertainment Reference Desk is read by very many bassoonists; you might get better answers if you ask one of the users in Category:Wikipedian bassoonists directly. User:Mindspillage, for example, who plays the bassoon at a professional level. Skarioffszky 20:56, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Which bassoon part? I think there are 2 plus contra. No, wait, maybe no contra. I can't remember. In any case, no, it's really easy. You'll be fine.

CB is mostly made up of very simple patterns strung together to make sections which are repeated a few times (3 seems to be Orff's favourite), and the majority of these are in simple time. There are some complexities of rhythm and time signature but the way the time signature is notated makes it very easy to count them. you should be fine! If there are any hard sections (e.g. semiquaver runs up or down scales, just play the 1st and 3rd of each set of 4 semiquavers, or if it's really fast, just the first. The point of days like these is that they are supposed to be fun so just enjoy it and play as much as you can! --Alex16z 10:26, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Iconic Blondes

for a Graphics NCEA assignment I have to design a set of disposable cameras based on a theme, and my theme is 'Iconic Blondes of the 20th and 21st Centuries'. I have 'iconic blondes' for every decade from the 1900s to 2000s except for a blonde from the 1900's. These are my other choices:

Lillian Gish.

1910s - Mary Pickford

1920s - Marlene Dietrich

1930s - Jean Harlow

1940s - Lauren Bacall (alternate-Betty Grable)

1950s - Marilyn Monroe

1960s - Brigitte Bardot (I replaced her with Catherine Deneuve because I really really dislike Bardot) (alternate-Twiggy)

1970s - Debbie Harry (alternate-Farrah Fawcett)

1980s - Madonna

1990s - Princess Diana (I replaced her with Kate Winslet) (alternate-Pamlea Anderson)

2000s - Paris Hilton (I replaced her with Cate Blanchett) (alternate-Britney Spears)

Can anyone help me find an iconic blonde for the 1900s? If I can't get a legit 1900s blonde I'll just leave it out and have an even group of ten.

How about if you move Mary Pickford to the 1900's (just barely) and substitute Lillian Gish in the 1910's ? Her hair color seems to have been subject to change, but was blonde for at least one famous magazine cover. StuRat 06:14, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also, you just have to fit Mae West in that list somewhere, for her overt sexuality. StuRat 06:26, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

No offense to Bacall, but I'd go with Veronica Lake (she of the peekaboo locks) or maybe Carole Lombard Betty Grable in the 40s. Clarityfiend 07:18, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Does it have to be a woman? Anchoress 07:24, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort
And isn't there someone better for the 2000s than Paris Hilton? --Richardrj talk email 07:59, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort
Yeah. I'd switch Princess Di and Madonna; Madonna was really more prominent in the 90s than the 80s, and Diana had kind of faded from view by then. And I'd put Gwen Stefani or Christina Aguilera in the 2ks in place of Paris.
Or even Cameron Diaz. JackofOz 08:24, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'd go with Betty Grable in the 40's....I'd definitely make it Twiggy for the 60's and Farrah Fawcett for the 70's. And for the 90's my vote's for Pamela Anderson. She was a big icon back then, especially as a go-to reference for a busty, larger than life blonde. For this decade, if not Britney, than it must be Paris.

What about Dr Clio! Perry-mankster 13:49, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

So, has anyone found an iconic blonde of the 1900s? (As StuRat pointed out himself, Mary Pickford's career had barely started and she was far from iconic at the time.) It seems as though female sex symbols and other celebrity projections would have to be sought out in the world of stage and opera, as the cinema's career, like Pickford, hadn't really permeated society yet either. I went through the female entries under 1900s#Important_personalities, but none of the candidates seem to have been blonde. ---Sluzzelin talk 20:02, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The best I can come up with is Lillian Russell, singer, actress and friend of Diamond Jim Brady, but some of the pictures show her as blonde and some don't, so I don't know. Clarityfiend 03:03, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Animes about business

There are animes about everything. I was just thinking how hilarious it would be if there were any animes about really mundane things. Are there any "office" animes the way there are "high school" animes?

There are a lot of animes that have people who are in business/are salarypersons, but they have a secret identity where they fight evil. A quick internet search of anime + secret identities oder anime + businessmen might help you out here. And let's not forget about protagonists' mothers and fathers who are oblivious to their child's adventures because their minds are too focused on their office. --JDitto 02:51, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort
Even more numerous than anime, and broader in scope, are manga, and there are definitely several that are about office workers, office politics and other such mundane situations. There's one in particular whose name I can't remember (it's in a book I have at home, i'll look for it later), which is about a man new to a company that is a set of object lessons about the correct behaviour in the workplace (done in a semi-humourous style). Confusing Manifestation 00:25, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
A little late, but I found the reference I was looking for: the work of Yoshikazu Ebisu (sadly a redlink) focuses mainly on salarymen and "joushiki", the "common sense" knowledge of social behaviour in the workplace. You may want to try tracking down some of his titles, including "Jigoku no Tenshi" ("Hell's Angel") and "Wakaranakute mo Daijoubu" ("It's All Right If You Don't Understand") which were apparently released in English in 1996. Type of movie poster

Is there any specific term for the kind of movie poster that features a lot of different images in a sort of mosaic, giving it an "epic" kind of feel? Examples: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Chronicles Of Riddick, SunDog: Frozen Legacy. Battle Ape 08:38, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, the technique is called photomontage or photo-composite, but that term is not specific to movie posters. In the movie poster business, there are various types of classic montage arrangements. For example, the "pyramid composition" typical of James Bond movie posters and made famous by Robert McGinnis. Or the "King of the Mountain" composite. You will notice the same themes appear again and again in composites. For example compare The Good German with Casablanca. The Mars Volta and French song titles

Hello:

I was wondering if anyone knows why The Mars Volta uses French song titles, when they have almost no Franco influence. On contrary, they have more Latin/Spanish influence. Their single L'Via L'Viaquez is a primarily Spanish song, but has a French title.

Thanks -- Vikramkr 16:10, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Vikramkr. I just went through T.M.V.'s albums, and saw virtually zero French titles, apart from the occasional usage of French word borrowings such as provocateur or roulette. The title L'Via L'Viaquez isn't French either, it's colloquial Puerto Rican Spanish. ---Sluzzelin talk 19:46, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh, my bad! ;). Thanks for the clarification! -- Vikramkr 20:46, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
The L' (with apostrophe) and the ending -quez probably added to the confusion. Both exist in French too (e.g.: Vous piquez l'argent.) As an article, L' normally would appear before a vowel both in French and Spanish. L'Via L'Viaquez is probably a variation of Elvia Elviaquez, the person to which the lyrics are dedicated. ---Sluzzelin talk 21:03, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort
"L'" does not normally appear before a vowel in Spanish. Corvus cornix 22:56, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort
What I meant was: When l' gets used in Spanish (colloquially e.g.), it's usually followed by a vowel, not a consonant. I didn't mean the other way around, i.e. that a word starting with a vowel normally is preceded by l' . Hope this clarifies it a bit. ---Sluzzelin talk 23:26, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Antwort

Since March of the Penguins there have been at least two other penguin movies released or soon to be so, including Happy Feet and the forthcoming Surf's Up.
