Lemuel Purnell Montgomery (c. 1786[1] – March 27, 1814) was an American military officer who fought in the Creek War. Montgomery was an attorney in Nashville, Tennessee when the War of 1812 broke out, and was commissioned as a major. He fought in a series of battles in the Creek War, culminating in the Battle of Talladega, for which he would be given a pair of pistols by Andrew Jackson which are today preserved at the Smithsonian.[2] Montgomery was killed in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on March 27, 1814.[3] Montgomery County, Alabama is named in his honor.[4]
