It is Nokia's first smartphone to run on the Symbian^3 operating system that will have single-tap interaction, addition of multiple home screens, and customization abilities. In addition, the display will have multi-touch capabilities with gesture support.

With regard to connectivity it has, among other features, HDMI out with Dolby Digital Plus sound and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The N8 will be the first ever device to support UMTS bands used by both T-Mobile USA and AT&T Mobility, with its Pentaband 3.5G radio.[4]

Due to ship in select markets during the third quarter of 2010 at a RRP of 370[2] ($499; £320) before subsidies and taxes.

History

The previous phone from the Nseries was the N97 with touchscreen which was criticized for its earlier firmware issues. Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's Executive Vice President for Markets, said in an interview that software quality control will be better than for the N97.[5]

The N8 will be the first device by Nokia with the Symbian^3 operating system. N8 was scheduled for the second quarter of 2010 but was pushed back to the third quarter.[6]

The previous Nokia phone with a focus on photography is the N86 8MP, which has an 8 Megapixel sensor and has been available since June 2009.[7]

The N8 will be the second Nokia to have a capacitive touchscreen, following the X6, but the first with multi-touch.

Software & applications

Software platform and user interface

The N8 will be the first device by Nokia with the Symbian^3 operating system. Symbian^3 was scheduled for the second quarter of 2010 but was pushed back to the third quarter.[6] Symbian^3 supports three home screens, each with up to six widgets that the user can customize. As with older versions of Symbian, multitasking is supported.[12] Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's Executive Vice President for Markets, said in an interview that quality control will be better than for the N97.[5]. There is a greater emphasis on the user interface and easier user-controls with Symbian^3 (such as consistency between menus, a commonly criticised factor of S^1 devices).

Contrary to rumours[13], future Nseries devices have a strong possibility to be coupled with Symbian platform, specifically, Symbian^4.[14] Other software that will work on this mobile phone will be:
