Elysian plains were a section of the Underworld in Roman mythology. The great Roman poet, Virgil, wisely saw how the Greek concept of hell could negatively affect the military and soldiers by stripping them of any hope in the afterlife. So, he created the Elysian Fields as a final resting place for the souls of the heroic and the virtuous, seeking to further incite valor from the Roman troops.
