Incorrect removal of my page edit

Blake Griffin was the first overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, so why delete my edit to the page? 2009_NBA_draft

I made an edit on the "10538 Overture" page, but only because clicking on cello rock redirects you to progressive rock anyways.

I made an edit on cher. In the book written about her it says her mother is of Irish and German descent it how ever doesn't say she has any Cherokee in her cher only started claiming she was Cherokee after the release of her song Half-Breed.

Cayambe Coca

Hello MaterialScientist...I am new to editing Wikipedia, so not sure if this is the proper way to respond to your reversion of my changes to Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve. Why "unencyclopedic addition"? The discussion about the health effect of radon is still going on - few scientific papers presented different findings - thus the short information about that fact is encyclopedic. Czestomir (talk) 05:50, 7 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:Sobachenkov, Medvedev, Ryabenko and Brezhnev.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Sobachenkov, Medvedev, Ryabenko and Brezhnev.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:37, 9 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

What sources are needed for observations of a 40 year 2-3x week customer of Souplantation?

I am trying to figure out why you removed a thoughful, factually correct edit I made to Souplantation's wiki on 6/12 within hours after I made it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souplantation

I am a 40 year customer of theirs for 2-3 times a week, so who would be a better source? I was present on their opening day having a special invite from the bartender who founded it. He had enticed me and others to try it by saying there would always be plenty of meat in the stockpot soups. Later when Mitt Romey's Bain Capital partner Michael Mack took over he told me that he would keep this "secret weapon" intact since it broadened the restaurant from vegetarian to general market. So this should surely merit a mention about the chain's success as favorites in many locations in California, Florida, Arizona and Georgia?

The idea that such valuable color would not be allowed in a Wiki article is ridiculous. This would be similar to one of the descendants of the space program not being able to add that their grandmother did critical calculations as depicted in "Hidden Figures" movie because they had no official source, since it took 50+ years to have this documented in the movie!

I'm the founder of one of the largest weekly newspapers in the country and also a Microsoft MVP for 7 years, which is the highest award in the tech field. Are my personal observations from 40 years as a loyal customer not qualified enough?

Thank you Greg Carmack — Preceding unsigned comment added by Walkdmx (talkcontribs) 17:43, 13 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Hey User:Walkdmx. What is needed is for that 40 year 2-3x week customer to have their opinions published in a reliable source. Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought; all we do is present what quality sources themselves say, and not what we as Wikipedia editors happen to think or believe. Your contribution may be perfectly appropriate for a blog, online review, or even in a related local or industry magazine, but it does not appear to be appropriate for an encyclopedia. Wrong (?) Correction

Hi Materialscientist,

I am the guy who tried to make a correction earlier today on the "Quantum confinement in semiconductors" section. First time for me to try to edit a wikipedia page, so please forgive if I haven't properly explained my correction.

I just noticed that the links to the source [75] are not refering to the cited one, "Optical fine structures of highly quantized InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots", but instead to "Power dissipation for systems with junctions of multiple quantum wires".

Which one is the one you wanted to refer ?

Best, Xayros

Collateral damage

Because of this block, for one minor edit filter triggering, there are now a large number of accounts with unblock-auto requests on their talk pages. From what I see, it appears to be a school, but perhaps there is more to it. Please take a look at the account to see whether removing the autoblock is prudent. Thanks —DoRD (talk) 11:37, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Given that a whole bunch of them have been posting personal information on their userpages, I'd be in favour of the block sticking around for a little while, at least until it's clear that the school understands how to use Wikipedia and how to keep it's pupils safe online. Yunshui  11:44, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
Ahh, I only saw that most of the userpages were redlinks. Yes, those were inappropriate, clearly, but having CAT:UNBLOCK suddenly populate with a dozen or so related requests was ... jarring. —DoRD (talk) 12:03, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
I've left notes for two of the students. —DoRD (talk) 12:16, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps I'm too sleepy and don't understand something - my block was issued on 8 June, and there is a series of unblock-auto requests on 14 June. There was some activity on that IP in between, but only on one day. I understand how an autoblock can autopropagate beyond 24 hours, but not in this case (please do educate me, use email if this page is not appropriate). Is this because some actions are hidden in CU logs? Anyway, I'll go offline soon, and anyone is welcome to remove this autoblock. Materialscientist (talk) 12:00, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
I assume that the blocked user logged in, tried to edit, and reinstated the autoblock. —DoRD (talk) 12:03, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
You mean that logging in (which can be done automatically by anyone, provided the login/password was autosaved on a local PC) would be sufficient to reset the autoblock, as we can't see "attempted editing". Hm .. Sorry, got to logout. Materialscientist (talk) 12:10, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
Logging in alone might be sufficient to trigger the autoblock, but I'm not certain. If they attempted to edit anything except their talk page, though, it wouldn't leave any traces for CU to see unless it tripped an edit filter. —DoRD (talk) 12:16, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Why are we blocking user accounts indefinitely for tripping the edit filter only once and without warning the user first? I feel like that's a bit overly excessive :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:52, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Same here. Tripping the edit filter once is similar to making one vandalistic edit. In the latter case, it would warrant a Level 1 warning; why should the former be any different? Unless it's a sockpuppet, even vandals should be given a chance. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 22:55, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
You assume that we must follow the ladder scheme: issue a level-1 warning for any non-constructive edit, gradually escalate it to level-4, then consider blocking. The current blocking policy does not require that, and I urge editors and admins to use common sense and experience (when time permits), make bold decisions, and be responsible for them. This what I do. I followed the templated ladder scheme in my early years, and still do sometimes, but experience tells that it works well as an exception rather than a rule, i.e., editors should not hesitate to skip some warning levels, or not to escalate warning levels at all, and write a free-text message. Otherwise we end up with users/IPs who get away for years by stopping at level-3 each time, and with poor-quality WP:AIV report (made simply because someone slapped a tag, and often blocked only because of that). Feel free to disagree, I do not require anyone to follow me. I just do know that we fail miserably in dealing with obvious vandalism/spam, and those who don't see that might wish to spend one weekday on patrolling some edit filters (I can give a hotlist). Materialscientist (talk) 00:21, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
In this particular case, they simply added the f-word to an article. That's not an uncommon vandal tactic—what's more fun for an immature child than inserting the f-word that they learned from their older siblings/peers into a Wikipedia article? If they added something grossly inappropriate then an immediate block may be more excusable, but simply adding the f-word shouldn't warrant an immediate block. Feel free to disagree, but I'd like to see your reasoning for it. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 22:13, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
In my experience, those who choose a random-string username come for one or a few edits maximum; their intent varies (many come to improve this Wiki), but in this case was hardly constructive. That said, I won't object lifting any of such block of mine, provided the unblocking admin takes responsibility for that account. Materialscientist (talk) 22:38, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
(talk page stalker) I feel that MS has an extremely effective nose for vandalism and I have had cause to be grateful for it dozens, perhaps hundreds, of times. Without wishing to sound too much like a retired colonel, I think we do far too much giving of chances to people who have no investment in what we are doing and are only here to waste our time. If someone turns up to say Fuck or Tracy Is A Slag or The Illuminati Did It d'you know what I think are our chances of that person ever becoming a useful editor? Around zero. I do not believe that it will happen. Just block them - they are timewasters, and giving them a whole hierarchy of chances just makes a mockery of what the rest of us are trying to do. Having read some of the other sections on this talk page. I think it appropriate to explain a bit more. I could have blocked these accounts myself but I think that formal Sockpuppet investigation keeps a better record and is easier for others to find in the future. I decided to link these accounts because my experience in the past is that such accounts can be reactivated by a person who is blocked for other infringements in the future, and because they have existed for some time, they make it more difficult to identify such accounts as sockpuppets of a person recently blocked. -- PBS (talk) 08:33, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Could you check if User:UCLAgirl623 is a sock of User:ThunderFan109, who you indef blocked about a year ago. Aside from the obvious knowing of the ins and outs of Wikipedia right off the bat (such as username customization and starting their talkpage with the talkheader template), what tipped me off was how they both asked for assistance in bringing an article to GA, and then requested that the work be done for them because they "don't feel like" doing it. Uncertainty parameter

I can see you have deleted my edit about the dimensions - I shifted it (modified) over to the talk page. Possibly there is a hidden conversion in the formula ?? On the subject of your photos , that blue tit or wren looks like a bird that is quite common in Victoria Australia. I can never work out how they survive the Victorian winter (even if only a couple of months long in the really cold period) since they clearly do not migrate.

And as for the kingfisher, another bird photo; that has morphed in Oz to the kookaburra. I think I know why - lack of year round flowing rivers in the vast majority of the continent. Mature KBs look as though they might weigh 700 grams or so - because they eat meat exclusively, lizards, frogs and small snakes and the like. The vicious invisible hand of Darwin has removed all the green and blue plumage and made them a dun colour to blend in with the eucalypts and malee scrub. Mr Darwin has bulked them up so they can handle killing the odd snake, as opposed to eating tiny river fish.

Just letting you know that I reverted your edit on Sinhalese people because it resulted in two broken image templates. The user that initially made that nonconstructive edit was a newly-registered user not an IP. (121.219.98.127 (talk) 07:37, 17 June 2017 (UTC))Reply

FYI

This and this are this spammer -- Dnil123456 who creates various blogspot, wix websites (and now with unique domain names too) and spams it across here. He does it across many actress bios on here. None of them official or anything, just spamming his stuff on here. I've blocked one account and numerous IPs over the past few days (an off wiki investigation is easy too and provides the complete list of spam targets). Don't know if there are other accounts. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 04:52, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort

Disruptive editing

Hello! Please help in preventing edit wars in the page Who Are You: School 2015. Anonymous editors have been deleting information in the page's reception section (things they find unflattering as they are fans of the show) even though a reliable source was provided which explicitly states that the show did suffer from poor ratings. Indonesian Ulema Council

Thank you for your information. I am a wikipedians on Bahasa Indonesia, I am not familiar with english version. I haven't edited ten times yet. therefore I don't see that feature. Would you please move the article for me? The official name for the organization is Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI). I also want to add an image (of its logo), but it is only available in Wikipedia Bahasa Indonesia. Mohamadhzanhari (talk) 22:41, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

In general, we use WP:Commonname which appears most frequently in English-speaking literature, not necessarily the official name, thus I'm not sure we need to move that article. Materialscientist (talk) 22:43, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Fried potatoes (perhaps?)

Hello, I was just looking at the French Fry page and noticed the obvious was left out. Sure you have France and Belgium fighting over who fried potatoes first but did anyone even look to see where they came from? Potatoes were being fried in the Americas were they are of origin for 1000s of years before settlers decided to take them to Europe in the 1700s. I can't comment on the page put I think it may be interesting to research more on that and possible make a paragraph prior to all the other discussions on the origin of potatoes and American Indians cooking with them. Seriously? Why does everyone always steal from native Americans lol? I have never made a comment like this so I hope you get it.

(Talk page stalker) Speaking about the French & Belgians - what about the Dutch? No, best if I don't go there. Ignore me please. Pdfpdf (talk) 09:38, 19 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Nestor Lozano: The page needs protection, you need to use {{Edit semi-protected}}. Why is your signature so different from your account name ? - FlightTime (open channel) 00:22, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
I personally don't think the page needs protection, since only one user vandalized it and that user is blocked. If it does need protection, it definitely doesn't need protection for 1 month. And my signature is different just because I felt like using the nickname as my sig but the real name as the username. Catalan (talk) 00:25, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort

Request to consider an unblock request

There is an unblock request at User talk:Acook1996, for a block you placed on 4 July 2013. After nearly four years are you willing to give the editor a chance to prove that he or she is now more mature, and capable of editing constructively? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 13:40, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

By the way, I was going to ping you on that editor's talk page, but just as I was about to click on the "save" button I remembered that you have ping notifications turned off. Apart from people like myself forgetting about that, there must be many editors who don't know about it at all and who try to ping you. Would you consider turning pings back on, even if you prefer to disable other notifications? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 13:44, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

I would agree giving Acook1996 a second chance.
I'll think about pings. Somehow I've missed the whole process of integrating pings into the Wikipedia communication system - I myself always felt that if I want to notify an editor, I should write something on their talk page. Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 23:42, 23 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
Hmm. And yet you didn't write something on my talk page, which is why I didn't see this message until a week after it was written. I see that the editor was unblocked by another administrator, but not until several days after the exchange above, whereas I would have unblocked much sooner had I seen your message.
When "pings" first came in I didn't think much of them, because exactly like you I felt that if I want to notify an editor I should write something on their talk page, and I found "pings" rather irritating. However, after a while I found that it really is quicker and less trouble to just include a link in a message that you are writing than to post the message and then go over to the editor's talk page and separately write another message, so I kind of grew to accept them. I say "kind of", because there are still one or two things about them that I don't like, and quite often I prefer to post to an editor's talk page instead, depending on the circumstances. However, even if you don't wish to send pings, disabling receiving them is potentially unhelpful, because, as I said above, whatever your feeling about pings may be, other editors are likely to issue them to you, expecting you to receive them. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 00:09, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Antwort
James, I thought you're watching this page, since you've posted a request here.
I would reply on your talk if you asked that. Materialscientist (talk) 00:22, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi MS. Hope you are well.
Recently an IP editor contacted me on my talkpage after I reverted his edit User talk:Usernamekiran#REMOVAL OF EDITED ARTICLE. In a nutshell, the user is claiming he is an employee of the University of Lagos, and wants to add phone number of the university in the article. I tried to find guideline/policy/essay which would disallow this; but I couldn't. Could you please tell me how to respond to that editor? Also, the number he is trying to add is different from the number provided on the official website. Thanks a lot, and I apologise for bothering you with such a trivial issue. —usernamekiran(talk) 10:50, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is simply an observation, I can't offer a specific policy, but I've seen these phone number to university edits before in this same fashion and have seen them get reverted almost immediately as if it was LTA. See example [2], [3], [4]72 talk 10:55, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Antwort
@72: Hi. Thanks for the reply. Yes, in the past I have reverted similar edits as well. All these universities belonged to African countries. CheckUser on suspected sockpuppet

Hi Materialscientist. I have a suspicion that the user JustofiedT147AG is a sockpuppet of the banned and confirmed sockpuppeteer Lysvincent (talk · contribs). I was not sure whether this was warranted to go through a long drawn-out SPI case. They share many of the same edit summaries and topics (EDM artists, music charts, discography edits), some of the user page markup is the same (Lysvincent created at least two accounts that he used the Picture of the Day template on). Their edit summaries are also quite similar: one of their habits of "added single" and the like in lower case letters (see here and here). One of their common topics was Weak (AJR song); Lysvincent created the page here, Justofied has edited and uploaded the cover art). Furthermore, Lysvincent created at least one account to update charts; Justofied has already set about doing this so soon after registering. Lysvincent also said one of their favourite artists was Imagine Dragons; Justofied has edited their discography quite a bit as well: here and here). Same with Axwell and Ingrosso, another of their favourites ([5] and [6]), and Adam Lambert (here and here). If you think I should file an SPI, would you please be able to look into it soon if this is not enough? I think if it is (or isn't), it should be fairly open-and-shut. Thanks. Ss112 10:18, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Antwort

Better ask checkuser who handled Lysvincent and their socks - I don't have CU data on those and can't retrieve them because all those users stopped editing too long ago. Hence I can't connect them to JustofiedT147AG. Materialscientist (talk) 10:47, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Antwort
I just did a search and it appears to have been Bbb23. As Bbb23 is quite busy with CheckUser stuff usually, I get the feeling then that the case will probably be asked to go through SPI. Would you be able to drop them a line? I'll send them a version of this message above anyway. Ss112 10:54, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Antwort
