Cookie Lommel is an American author, biographer, film producer and global activist who lectures on the subject of understanding global cultures.
Early Life
Cookie Lommel began her career as a journalist in the music industry, starting as music editor for Cashbox magazine followed by associate editor of Radio & Records Magazine and editor of Black Elegance magazine.
As an entertainment industry reporter at Cable News Network (CNN), she interviewed celebrities on camera. She also worked as entertainment editor at Teen Magazine
Work with Ulli Lommel and as an Activist
She met her husband, actor-director Ulli Lommel and they formed a partnership. She became the producer of several of his films.
In addition, Cookie Lommel is an award-winning activist. After she watched, transfixed, as the Israelis mounted Operation Solomon to rescue Ethiopian Jews from civil conflict in 1991, her own humanitarian conscience was shaken with the possibility of what one determined voice could do to help an embattled planet. This prompted her to form Operation Unity[1], a non-profit organization that efectively transformed the lives of teenagers utilizing the small community model of an Israeli Kibbutz.
"She was fascinated with this tiny country and considered the kibbutz a microcosm of a community showing 'harmony in action'. She thought that American children would benefit from a trip there. On her return she sought teenagers who were 'at risk' but showed potential. She sent 5 African-Americans and 5 Latinos to Israel where they worked on a kibbutz for two months. Their lives were changed. Some went to college. Others participated in worthwhile projects and spoke publicly about their experience"[2]
The Los Angeles Times identified Ms. Lommel as a "One-woman bridge."[3] The New York Amsterdam News designated her as "The Bridge Builder."
