The 20th Summer Deaflympics Games were originally scheduled to be held from 14 to 26 October 2004 in Athens, but was decided to withdraw and host it in 2005 due to the schedule of 2004 Summer Olympics.

A first selection of the bidding process was held on 24 June 1997 in Lausanne.

A second selection for the bid for the games was held on 9 March 1999 in Davos, Switzerland.[1]
