Foxborough is part of the Greater Boston area. The population was 18,618 at the 2020 census. "Foxborough" is the official spelling of the town name, although the alternative spelling "Foxboro" is also frequently used. This alternative spelling is used by the United States Postal Service as the correct form by which to address mail to recipients in the town, although both can be processed by their system. The sign on the post office reads "Foxboro". Foxborough is best known as the site of Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL) and the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (MLS). ==History== Settled in 1704 and incorporated in 1778, the town of Foxborough was named for Charles James Fox, a Whig member of Parliament and a staunch supporter of the Colonies in the years leading up to the American Revolution. The town was once home to the world's largest straw hat factory. Founded by local businessman E.P. Carpenter, the Union Straw Works burned to the ground in the early 20th century. The town post office now stands on the site. Foxborough was composed of small neighborhood communities until the early 1900s. These included Foxvale/Paineburgh, which remained semi-independent until the early twentieth century; Quaker Hill in South Foxborough; and Lakeview/Donkeyville in West Foxborough. Schaefer Stadium (later known as Sullivan Stadium, then Foxboro Stadium) opened in 1971 as the home of the New England Patriots, after the football team spent its first eleven seasons playing at various stadiums in Boston. The family of Billy Sullivan owned both the Patriots and the stadium until they sold the team in 1988. The stadium, however, lapsed into bankruptcy and was then bought by paper magnate Robert Kraft. With Kraft in control of Foxboro Stadium, he prevented the Patriots from relocating to St. Louis in 1994 by refusing to let the team break their lease, then bought the Patriots outright. Kraft then founded the New England Revolution, one of the charter clubs of Major League Soccer, in 1996. Gillette Stadium opened in 2002 as a replacement for Foxboro Stadium. The Patriot Place shopping plaza, built on land surrounding the stadium bought by Kraft, completed construction in 2009. The plaza includes a variety of restaurants, clothing stores, and other retailers. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.1 km2, of which 52.0 km2 is land and 2.1 km2 (3.88%) is water. Spring and fall are usually mild, but conditions are widely varied, depending on wind direction and jet stream positioning. The warmest month is July, with an average high temperature of 83 °F and an average low temperature of 62 °F. The coldest month is January, with an average high temperature of 36 °F and an average low temperature of 18 °F. Periods exceeding 90 °F in summer and below 10 °F in winter are not uncommon but rarely extended, with about 14 days per year seeing the former extreme. Because of the town's relatively short distance from the Atlantic Ocean, temperatures tend to remain warmer than locations further inland. Like the rest of the northeastern seaboard, precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the entire year, with the winter months receiving slightly more precipitation than the summer months. Powerful storm systems known as Nor'easters can produce heavy amounts of rain and snow at any time of the year, but these storms most often strike during the winter months, causing significant snowfall amounts and blizzard conditions. Thunderstorms occur somewhat frequently in the summer, occasionally bringing heavy downpours, damaging winds, and hail. Tornado activity is relatively low in the area, although there have been a fair share of tornado warnings issued over the years. Due to its location along the United States eastern seaboard, Foxborough is somewhat vulnerable to Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms that threaten the region from late summer into early autumn. {{Weather box |location = Foxborough, Massachusetts |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 68 |Feb record high F = 70 |Mar record high F = 90 |Apr record high F = 96 |May record high F = 96 |Jun record high F = 97 |Jul record high F = 102 |Aug record high F = 102 |Sep record high F = 97 |Oct record high F = 87 |Nov record high F = 78 |Dec record high F = 76 |year record high F = 102 |Jan high F = 36 |Feb high F = 40 |Mar high F = 48 |Apr high F = 59 |May high F = 70 |Jun high F = 78 |Jul high F = 83 |Aug high F = 81 |Sep high F = 73 |Oct high F = 62 |Nov high F = 52 |Dec high F = 41 |year high F = 60.25 |Jan low F = 18 |Feb low F = 21 |Mar low F = 28 |Apr low F = 37 |May low F = 47 |Jun low F = 57 |Jul low F = 62 |Aug low F = 61 |Sep low F = 53 |Oct low F = 42 |Nov low F = 33 |Dec low F = 24 |year low F = 40.25 |Jan record low F = −19 |Feb record low F = −16 |Mar record low F = −4 |Apr record low F = 14 |May record low F = 28 |Jun record low F = 37 |Jul record low F = 42 |Aug record low F = 39 |Sep record low F = 30 |Oct record low F = 20 |Nov record low F = 4 |Dec record low F = −14 |year record low F = −19 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 3.78 |Feb precipitation inch = 3.68 |Mar precipitation inch = 4.81 |Apr precipitation inch = 4.39 |May precipitation inch = 3.65 |Jun precipitation inch = 4.08 |Jul precipitation inch = 3.91 |Aug precipitation inch = 3.91 |Sep precipitation inch = 3.66 |Oct precipitation inch = 4.35 |Nov precipitation inch = 4.46 |Dec precipitation inch = 4.52 |year precipitation inch = 49.2 |Jan snow inch = 15.0 |Feb snow inch = 11.9 |Mar snow inch = 9.6 |Apr snow inch = 2.6 |May snow inch = 0 |Jun snow inch = 0 |Jul snow inch = 0 |Aug snow inch = 0 |Sep snow inch = 0 |Oct snow inch = 0.2 |Nov snow inch = 2.1 |Dec snow inch = 11.5 |year snow inch= 52.8 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan precipitation days = 11.0 |Feb precipitation days = 9.5 |Mar precipitation days = 11.6 |Apr precipitation days = 11.8 |May precipitation days = 12.3 |Jun precipitation days = 11.3 |Jul precipitation days = 10.2 |Aug precipitation days = 9.4 |Sep precipitation days = 8.9 |Oct precipitation days = 10.1 |Nov precipitation days = 11.3 |Dec precipitation days = 11.1 |year precipitation days=128.5 |Jan snow days = 7.3 |Feb snow days = 5.9 |Mar snow days = 4.8 |Apr snow days = 1.1 |May snow days = 0 |Jun snow days = 0 |Jul snow days = 0 |Aug snow days = 0 |Sep snow days = 0 |Oct snow days = 0.2 |Nov snow days = 1.2 |Dec snow days = 5.2 |Jan sun = 164.3 |Feb sun = 169.5 |Mar sun = 213.9 |Apr sun = 228.0 |May sun = 266.6 |Jun sun = 288.0 |Jul sun = 300.7 |Aug sun = 275.9 |Sep sun = 237.0 |Oct sun = 207.7 |Nov sun = 144.0 |Dec sun = 142.6 |source 1 = Weather Channel - -For the purposes of the United States Census Bureau, the built-up central area of Foxborough known as the Foxborough Census Designated Place (CDP) has a total area of 7.6 km2 (3.0 mi2). 7.5 km2 (2.9 mi2) is land and 0.1 km2 (0.1 mi2) (1.69%) is water. - -==Climate== - - -Foxborough's climate is humid continental (Köppen: Dfa) with four distinct seasons, which is the predominant climate for Massachusetts and New England.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Peel |first1=M. - -{{Weather box -|location = Foxborough, Massachusetts -|single line = Y -|Jan record high F = 68 -|Feb record high F = 70 -|Mar record high F = 90 -|Apr record high F = 96 -|May record high F = 96 -|Jun record high F = 97 -|Jul record high F = 102 -|Aug record high F = 102 -|Sep record high F = 97 -|Oct record high F = 87 -|Nov record high F = 78 -|Dec record high F = 76 -|year record high F = 102 -|Jan high F = 36 -|Feb high F = 40 -|Mar high F = 48 -|Apr high F = 59 -|May high F = 70 -|Jun high F = 78 -|Jul high F = 83 -|Aug high F = 81 -|Sep high F = 73 -|Oct high F = 62 -|Nov high F = 52 -|Dec high F = 41 -|year high F = 60.25 -|Jan low F = 18 -|Feb low F = 21 -|Mar low F = 28 -|Apr low F = 37 -|May low F = 47 -|Jun low F = 57 -|Jul low F = 62 -|Aug low F = 61 -|Sep low F = 53 -|Oct low F = 42 -|Nov low F = 33 -|Dec low F = 24 -|year low F = 40.25 -|Jan record low F = −19 -|Feb record low F = −16 -|Mar record low F = −4 -|Apr record low F = 14 -|May record low F = 28 -|Jun record low F = 37 -|Jul record low F = 42 -|Aug record low F = 39 -|Sep record low F = 30 -|Oct record low F = 20 -|Nov record low F = 4 -|Dec record low F = −14 -|year record low F = −19 -|precipitation colour = green -|Jan precipitation inch = 3.78 -|Feb precipitation inch = 3.68 -|Mar precipitation inch = 4.81 -|Apr precipitation inch = 4.39 -|May precipitation inch = 3.65 -|Jun precipitation inch = 4.08 -|Jul precipitation inch = 3.91 -|Aug precipitation inch = 3.91 -|Sep precipitation inch = 3.66 -|Oct precipitation inch = 4.35 -|Nov precipitation inch = 4.46 -|Dec precipitation inch = 4.52 -|year precipitation inch = 49.2 -|Jan snow inch = 15.0 -|Feb snow inch = 11.9 -|Mar snow inch = 9.6 -|Apr snow inch = 2.6 -|May snow inch = 0 -|Jun snow inch = 0 -|Jul snow inch = 0 -|Aug snow inch = 0 -|Sep snow inch = 0 -|Oct snow inch = 0.2 -|Nov snow inch = 2.1 -|Dec snow inch = 11.5 -|year snow inch= 52.8 -|unit precipitation days = 0.01 in -|unit snow days = 0.1 in -|Jan precipitation days = 11.0 -|Feb precipitation days = 9.5 -|Mar precipitation days = 11.6 -|Apr precipitation days = 11.8 -|May precipitation days = 12.3 -|Jun precipitation days = 11.3 -|Jul precipitation days = 10.2 -|Aug precipitation days = 9.4 -|Sep precipitation days = 8.9 -|Oct precipitation days = 10.1 -|Nov precipitation days = 11.3 -|Dec precipitation days = 11.1 -|year precipitation days=128.5 -|Jan snow days = 7.3 -|Feb snow days = 5.9 -|Mar snow days = 4.8 -|Apr snow days = 1.1 -|May snow days = 0 -|Jun snow days = 0 -|Jul snow days = 0 -|Aug snow days = 0 -|Sep snow days = 0 -|Oct snow days = 0.2 -|Nov snow days = 1.2 -|Dec snow days = 5.2 -|Jan sun = 164.3 -|Feb sun = 169.5 -|Mar sun = 213.9 -|Apr sun = 228.0 -|May sun = 266.6 -|Jun sun = 288.0 -|Jul sun = 300.7 -|Aug sun = 275.9 -|Sep sun = 237.0 -|Oct sun = 207.7 -|Nov sun = 144.0 -|Dec sun = 142.6 -|source 1 = Weather Channel<ref>Average weather for Foxboro Weather Channel.
