Although English is widely taught throughout the country, very little of it is spoken, even in the capital city – you will require a good knowledge of Russian or Belarusian. Place names can be confusing for English speakers, as they can be Romanized either from their Russian or Belarusian names, with seemingly no consistency. For instance, you will see both "Grondno" and "Hrodna" referring to the same town.
